Position Summary:

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) Scientific Protocol Implementation (SPI) Unit is seeking a motivated, self-starting Research Specialist with an eye for detail and a desire to make a difference in the world. The SPI unit provides technical support, and nonhuman primate research management to researchers within the University of Wisconsin, nationally and internationally. This unit is particularly important for external investigators who would not otherwise have access to nonhuman primates. The SPI unit employs highly trained research specialists to maximize research output and enhance safety and compliance, while minimizing any possible animal welfare concerns for complex procedures to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The SPI Research Specialists provide directed technical support for studies utilizing nonhuman primate (NHP) models in a diverse array of NHP research projects both independently and as part of a team; manage research projects for investigators by coordinating experiments with WNPRC resources. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, creative, independent individual and join an elite group of highly skilled research specialists performing the animal portion of a diverse array of nonhuman primate research projects conducted at the WNPRC.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

BS/BA in Biology, Physiology, Animal Sciences or related field required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimum of 6 months experience in the handling and manipulation of nonhuman primates, as well as knowledge and understanding of human physiology, endocrinology and biology is required. Proficiency in computer data management required. An ability to obtain venous blood samples is also required.

Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint are required. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Candidates should understand research principles and regulations, and possess excellent problem-solving skills.

License or Certificate:

BL2+ and radiation certification will be acquired upon hire.

Additional Information:

Applicant must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates, infectious diseases, and chemicals/medications in a medical research setting, and wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).

The applicant will initially be introduced to the standard procedures used for animal care and handling at the Primate Center, and will be required to obtain both a UW animal care and handling certification from RARC as well as complete the radiation safety certification from the UW Safety Department. Additional relevant training may be required as needed.

Must be TB negative.
Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized.
Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.

Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.

The WNPRC is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public. Based in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), the WNPRC is committed to diversity both as an end in itself, but also as a valuable means for eliminating health disparities through research.
