Position Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading medical research program run by Dr. David O'Connor. More information on Dr. O'Connor's research program can be found at https://dho.pathology.wisc.edu/ .
This position involves using DNA sequencing to understand SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Since management of large numbers of samples and interpretation of sequencing data are complex, the successful applicant will have strong computer skills.
The successful candidate will assist in developing, planning, and executing large experiments, will have a strong academic background, and show exceptional eagerness and enthusiasm. They will operate, clean, and maintain organization of research equipment and research areas as well as track inventory levels and place replenishment orders. Day-to-day responsibilities will include obtaining residual samples for sequencing from testing providers, isolating nucleic acids and performing genetic sequencing, and interpreting sequencing data, as well as communicating results with collaborators and sharing data publicly.
The successful applicant will also be expected to assist in the preparation of data for publication purposes and participate in routine lab maintenance and other ongoing projects in Dr. O'Connor's laboratory as needed.

Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's degree required in immunology, virology, microbiology, or a related field.
Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
The ability to understand and communicate complex concepts, including reading and understanding scientific literature, is required. Excellent communication and computer skills are required.
Prefix assignment determined by years of relevant work experience. A minimum of 7 years experience is required for appointment at the senior level.
License or Certificate:
BSL-3 training and biosafety training are required and can be completed upon hire.
Additional Information:
The applicant must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management Driving Authorization and Car Fleet eligibility requirements in order to transport samples to/from testing providers.
Working with pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is an essential function of this position. UW-Madison complies with all applicable health and safety regulations. Nevertheless, working with pathogens poses health risks. Individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 can experience negative health consequences. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19. Applicants are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider about risks. UW-Madison will provide necessary personal protective equipment, but a successful candidate must be willing to work with samples containing SARS-CoV-2 despite the aforementioned known risks.
