Position Summary:

This position provides technical support to the Internal Medicine service of UW Veterinary Care (UWVC). The position requires initiative to independently follow through with technical responsibilities. Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1) Oversees daily receiving schedules, provides assistance and initiates changes as needed.

2) Develops knowledge and responsibility in areas of specialization to include maintenance of special equipment, instructing others in use and care, assisting clinician and students in procedures.

3) Anticipates needs of clinicians, staff and students during procedures and in primary animal care.

4) Assists in the instruction of professional veterinary students and training of entry level Veterinary Technicians as requested.

5) Contributes to and participates in team building by assisting in problem solving activities.

The work is performed under limited supervision.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Certification as Wisconsin Veterinary Technician or Eligibility to Obtain within 12 months.

Highly qualified candidates will have the following: a minimum of 1 year experience working as a Small Animal technician; possess excellent communication and technical skills; ability to multitask and prioritize while assisting/teaching 4th year students; ability to make independent decisions which can affect the quality/outcome of animal life; function calmly in stressful situations and to work cooperatively with other people.

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.

License or Certificate:

Certification as Wisconsin Veterinary Technician or Eligibility to Obtain within 12 months

This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 1, 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.

To qualify for Level 1: Entry level, new CVT grad or awaiting to sit for the CVT exam, or some CVT working experience with no specialization.

To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 2 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for specialization.

To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:30pm with 30 minutes lunch.
Flexibility to cover various shifts as needed. Start time can be flexible.

Some night, weekend, and holiday on-call hours as required by the hospital.
