Assistant Director, Career Services

General summary/purpose:

Johns Hopkins University has developed an ambitious vision to continue to integrate life design, experiential learning, and mentoring in the academic and co-curricular learning experience for all students and postdoctoral fellows. Under the leadership of Dr. Farouk Dey, the inaugural vice provost for integrative learning and life design, the university has announced the creation of three new departments and several new initiatives and mission that will ensure that every student and postdoctoral fellow will have the ability to pursue life purpose regardless of background, field of study, or social capital. The Career Services Office’s mission is to help students make a powerful impact in public health by connecting to opportunities beyond the classroom through enhancing career/professional development engagement; coordinating experiential learning experiences; engaging with public health employers and alumni.

The Assistant Director, Career Services is uniquely situated in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Career Services Office and works equally with graduate-level students and alumni along with employer partners in the multi-disciplinary based public health fields. The Assistant Director, Career Services is charged with providing comprehensive career education and professional development to graduate students/alumni in multi-disciplinary based departments, overseeing career/professional development resources for these constituents, developing and conducting workshops on job search techniques and related issues, and providing outreach to employers and external constituents.

Key Accountabilities:

Career Education & Consultation (50%)

  • Serve as subject matter expert to students and alumni in multi-disciplinary based public health fields about strategies to design their career/professional development path.
  • Plan and execute in-person and virtual workshops, programs, content, and digital resources to help students and alumni career exploration, branding, networking, interviewing and job & internship search strategies.
  • Create educational virtual activities such as weekly/monthly workshops, informational webinars, panels, and office hours specialized for students/alumni interested in multi-disciplinary based public health fields.
  • Coach and consult graduate students through either 1-on-1 and/or groups to help them prepare a targeted job search in multi-disciplinary based public health fields split between in-person and virtual.
  • Collaborate with program directors, faculty, and administrators in multi-disciplinary departments to develop training programs and resources effectively prepare graduate students for employment.
  • Develop new and innovative methods for coaching graduate students both in-person and virtually.

Employer Relations (25%)

  • Develops and manages ongoing relationships with companies, agencies and organizations, domestically and internationally in multi-disciplinary based public health fields that leads to employment opportunities (internships and full-time) for students.
  • Assists Director, Career Services and Assistant Director, Employer Relations with developing employer relations strategy, including target organizations and plans for connecting with them.
  • Coordinates with employer partners to conduct employer focused events, such as annual career fair, employer information sessions, Public Health Exchange (PHX) sessions, career treks (in-person and virtual), on-campus interviews, panels, etc.
  • Educates employers on best ways to connect with students and on tools available to employers for student interaction and evaluation.
  • Partners with faculty who teach subject matter related to industry coverage areas to share and engage industry contacts on campus.
  • Markets students to specific companies based on student interest and qualifications, and hiring organization’s recruitment need.
  • Serve on university-wide or regional or national public health professional association committees to promote relevant career initiatives for the Bloomberg community and for students.
  • Work with colleagues across the institution to capitalize on university resources to benefit our students and alumni.

Partnerships & Outreach (25%)

  • Develop strategic relationships with key academic stakeholders (program directors, faculty, etc.) to facilitate continuous needs assessment and the effective implementation of professional development for students and alumni.
  • Initiate and maintain external partnerships with Bloomberg alumni through in-person and virtual networking receptions, alumni events, employer visits and school-wide activities.
  • Partner with Office of Alumni Relations and Office of Public Health Practice and Training to create professional development series and targeted career panels
  • Engage internal partners within Johns Hopkins community (i.e., Carey Business School, the JHMI Professional Development and Career Office (PDCO), the Office of Integrative Learning and Life Design (ILLD), Hopkins Connect, and Hire Hopkins) in order to share resources and best practices.
  • Assist with communication efforts for the Career Services Office via list-serv, webpages, social media and website.
  • Contribute to content and design for annual Career Planner, a 32-page resource guide for all students.
  • Represents the Career Services Office and the Bloomberg School in speaking to prospective and newly admitted students during Student Visitor Days, Open Houses, Student Orientations and other associated recruitment events.

Computer & Other Special Needs for Position

Computer and standard office equipment is used on a daily basis. Must have excellent computer skills (Word, Excel and Access) and to quickly learn other programs as needed. Must be comfortable presenting professionally to small and large groups using technologies such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, PowerPoint, etc.

The position generally works independently; decision-making actions are made in conjunction with the Director, Career Services.

Internal and External Contacts

Daily contact with students and alumni, either in a coaching role (1:1 or small group), in teaching career courses and workshops, or developing programming. Regular contact with faculty and staff, assessing needs of students from multi-disciplinary based public health departments and coordinating career services programming with academic units, with other Bloomberg administrative offices and with Johns Hopkins student services offices whenever appropriate. Sector-specific contacts and employers on a regular basis. Represents Bloomberg at local and national professional development associations related to public health employment. Extensive internal contacts with Director, Career Services and Assistant Director, Employer Relations. Extensive external contacts in person, by correspondence and telephone with senior managers, chairs of alumni associations, senior human resources professionals and hiring managers.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Business, Human Resources or Organizational Development or comparable degree. PhD preferred.

Experience

  • Three years’ related experience:
    • working in a multi-disciplinary based field of public health
    • experience in career services, student affairs, or student services
    • experience in university development, alumni relations or other related marketing and program management experience.

Skills & Knowledge

  • A self-starter who works independently and is motivated to engage with students, alumni, employers, and others to facilitate connections, build relationships and increase job and internship opportunities.
  • Superior interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Well-defined communication skills (in speaking and writing) required to effectively represent JHSPH; especially in marketing JHSPH students to new employers
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to manage complex and competing programs, projects and priorities
  • Knowledge of all aspects of career development, ability to counsel students in their professional planning.
  • Knowledge of public health industry and understanding of recruitment and hiring trends in public health
  • Ability to present information to small, medium and large and small groups of students, employers, faculty and staff both in-person and virtually.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, students, alumni and external constituents
    Must be proficient with technology (MS Office Suite, CRM, Handshake, Zoom, Skype) and interested in identifying and adopting technology to reach and connect target audiences through social media.
  • Openness to learn new technologies for career development.
  • Team player and demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative workplace environment.
  • Flexibility with hours, especially during periods when programs may extend outside of regular work hours, including limited weekend work.
