Position Summary:

Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

Individual advising appointments are scheduled with a designated program staff member at least twice annually for high-touch academic advising, coaching and monitoring academic progress; exploring career goals, aspirations, and other concerns; and identifying additional experiences for the pursuit of personal and academic excellence.

Scholars are organized by classes for the development and enhancement of leadership and organizational skills. They also explore and lead discussions on contemporary, campus, and other issues of interest, interact in small groups, and plan social and volunteer service activities.

The MJLSP Program Advisor is expected to provide Scholars with academic, social, personal, and career support through direct advising and program activities. Responsibilities include holistic advising that assist scholars with their academic, professional, and personal development. The Program Advisor also assists in the development of program activities (retreats, workshops, annual events) that further promote community building and student development.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Master's required, preferably in the behavioral or social sciences, education, or related areas.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

-Two (2) years of full-time professional work experience in higher education in academic advising, student affairs, student services, counseling, or related field.
-One year recruitment and outreach experience.
-Direct experience working with underrepresented ethnic/minority and socially/economically disadvantaged undergraduates.
-Manage a workload in a fast-paced, high traffic area and the ability to multi-task.
-General knowledge of academic disciplines, programs, and resources.
-Excellent interpersonal, customer service, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills.
-Demonstrated ability to promote an understanding and respect of cultural and human diversity and abilities.
-Experience working in a dynamic team environment as well as independently.
-General knowledge of and skills with Microsoft Office Software and in other computer software and tools.
-Experience working with academically talented students.
-Must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Additional Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
-Demonstrated ability in developing and coordinating academic programs for students.
-Experience working with academic support programs and services, and diverse faculty and/or staff.
-Demonstrated ability to create and maintain relationships with program stakeholders.
-Ability to exercise initiative and creativity to enhance programming for undergraduate students.
-General knowledge of quantitative and qualitative measures for program evaluation.
-Knowledge and understanding of the preparation for graduate and professional school opportunities.
-Recruitment outreach experience.
