Position Summary:

The Net-Zero Initiative is a public-private research endeavor involving five universities, the Soil Health Institute, the Innovation Center for US Dairy, and private industry seeking to improve the environmental footprint of dairy production by filling critical knowledge gaps associated with current and novel agricultural technologies.

As part of this 6-year study, you will help set-up experiments and be responsible for the collection of data relating to agronomic performance, soil carbon stocks, soil health parameters, and greenhouse gas fluxes from large, experimental field plot studies and on-farm paired-field studies. This position will also involve some analysis of collected samples, report drafting, and the organization and management of small work crews to successfully execute data collection, management, and curation responsibilities.

This position is supervised by Dr. Gregg Sanford in collaboration with Randal Jackson (Agronomy) and Matt Ruark (Soil Science).

Degree and Area of Specialization:

B.S. required, M.S. preferred in Agronomy, Environmental Science, Ecology, Biogeochemistry or related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

This position combines field, lab, and office work. The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience working in a field-based research program. Research experience with cropping systems ecology and management including field sampling, sample processing and analysis, sample archiving, data entry and retrieval, and database management preferred. Fieldwork involves conditions that may be inclement, and requires the ability to lift and move equipment and supplies. The ability to work well with others on a diverse team, attention to detail, and a well-organized approach to work are all a must. This includes the ability to work alone or in a group, good communication skills, competent record keeping skills, and good time management. Keen practical skills such as an understanding of basic tools (measuring tools, saws, draw knives, chippers etc.), equipment use and maintenance are also beneficial. Experience supervising staff, budgeting, and report writing a plus, but not required. Must meet criteria to drive university owned vehicles.
