Colby College has an opening for laboratory technician to assist in project-oriented research in the regulation of mitotic receptor trafficking in the Department of Biology. The laboratory technician for the Cota Lab will be a full-time (40 hours per week) NSF grant-funded position through 04/30/2024. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Conduct experiments related to the project
  • Oversee daily workings of the lab
  • Maintain equipment and order laboratory supplies
  • Work with undergraduate students and assist members of the lab with use of scientific instrumentation; delegate tasks as necessary
  • Communicate effectively with the principal investigator and other members of the lab
  • Maintain accurate record keeping
  • Offer creative input into the research as desired
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS :

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • At least two years of previous research laboratory experience preferably including familiarity with the use of confocal microscopes
  • Proficiency with data analysis and interpretation (e.g., Microsoft Excel) and statistics is required; proficiency with quantitative image analysis is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, record keeping, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision, as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community


KEY RELATIONSHIPS :

This position has significant interactions with students and occasional interactions with faculty and staff. Technician will be expected to assist undergraduates with protocols and use of scientific instrumentation.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Laboratory environment. General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Occasional lifting is required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
