About the Position: The full-time, categorically-funded, pursuant to Ed Code 87470 instructor will enjoy a 190 - Day work schedule. This position requires a commitment to campus, departmental, and community involvement duties including, but not limited to, program planning, assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), professional development and scholarly activity, and service to community and industry.

This position is scheduled to begin on August 5, 2021, pending categorical funding and Governing Board ratification. There may be additional training days to be scheduled with candidate prior to start date as listed above.

About the Department: The Cabrillo College Children's Center functions as the demonstration lab school program for the Early Childhood Education (ECE) department. The center also serves as campus child care for student families and community members for children five (5) months through five (5) years.

Children's Center staff members are part of a collaborative teaching team with the ECE faculty, families, and students. The philosophy of the Center includes a developmentally-based curriculum with a commitment to anti-bias principles. It supports and nurtures the well-being of all families living in a diverse society. Staffing reflects the belief that an optimal learning and care giving environment for children includes a team of people who are diverse in many ways, including ethnicity, languages spoken, family life and community.

About the College : Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby agricultural and farming industries as well as the Silicon Valley business environment.

S tarting Salary Range: $30,397 to $54,975 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the Children's Center Teacher salary schedule is step 9. A doctoral stipend of $3,816 per year is granted to eligible faculty.

Examples of Duties

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Under the supervision of the Children's Center Director, and support from ECE Faculty, the teaching and mentoring responsibilities will include:

  • Demonstrating professionalism and continuous learning as an early educator related to center and department goals.
  • Facilitating a high-quality and inclusive classroom learning environment that supports the developmental stages of infants, toddlers, preschool age and children with special needs, based on the center's philosophy and goals.
  • Awareness of and implementation of Title 22: Community Care Licensing, Health, Safety & Nutrition Regulations.
  • Awareness of and implementation of best practices related to Title 5: California Department of Education, Early Care and Education programs.
  • Addressing all aspects of culture, language, diversity & equity within the classroom environment.
  • Building effective relationships and communicating well with students and families of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including adult students with disabilities.
  • Developing and implementing curriculum reflecting diversity and the anti-bias approach.
  • Understanding the role of play-based curriculum in children's learning and development.
  • Implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the practice of ECE theorists, NAEYC Standards, DRDP Development Profile, and the California Department of Education Guidelines and Foundations for Early Learning.
  • Observing and assessing children's development through the use of the DRDP Developmental Profile, ASQ-Ages & Stages Questionnaire, learning stories and other relevant forms of documentation.
  • Awareness and successful implementation of the essential school readiness domains specifically in areas of social-emotional development, language & literacy, cognitive development, physical well-being, and motor development and approaches to learning.
  • Working closely with ECE faculty in the supervision and mentoring of student teachers and interns, while working with young children in the lab school setting.
  • Planning and facilitating activities that support family partnerships including (monthly meetings, conferences, special functions, community resource support and other general systems to ensure family success).
  • Performing general cleanup and organization of classrooms and office, and shopping for supplies, which may require driving
  • Meeting regularly with Director and ECE faculty to discuss needs of children, curriculum, and ECE students.
  • May provide bilingual services to monolingual and limited English-speaking program participants.
  • Teach assigned classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments
  • Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled hours
  • Cooperate with and participate as may be required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.
  • Attendance at faculty meetings and campus-wide committee functions.
  • Performing related duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Required Discipline Specific Requirements/Licensure:

  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff, AND
  • Possession of, or be eligible for prior to interview process, a California Child Development Permit at the Master Teacher level AND
  • A minimum of sixty (60) units of college coursework, INCLUDING twenty-four (24) units in Early Childhood Education (ECE)/Child Development (CD) which includes core courses as identified on the California Child Development Permit Matrix, AND six (6) administration units, AND two (2) adult supervision units OR the alternative qualifications of a Bachelor of Arts degree or higher, WITH twelve (12) units in ECE/CD, AND three (3) units supervised field experience in an ECE/CD setting AND
  • Minimum of three (3) full, continuous years of early care and education teaching experience, working within a single and consistent group of infants, toddlers, or preschoolers AND
  • Ability to safely lift forty (40) pounds repeatedly each day, with the physical ability to move up & down in various positions when assisting children.

Required Professional Expertise :
  • Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field, curriculum development and assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy, including Guided Pathways
  • Knowledge of and commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching strategies and practices that enhance student success
  • Understanding of, demonstrated responsiveness to, and ability to communicate with, the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning)
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others, using high level problem solving strategies.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and effective use of technology
  • Use of technology applicable to role and responsibilities within the early care and education environment (Microsoft Word, Excel, computer desktop/laptop/iPad, action cameras and software such as Go-Pros, etc.)
  • Evidence of professional activities and service beyond primary teaching assignments
  • Development and review of curriculum, including assessment of learning
  • Demonstrated ability to reflect critically on institutional and teaching practices that aim to increase cultural responsiveness
  • Knowledge and understanding of the accountability and critical dimensions of equity
  • Demonstrated ability of implementing time management skills into professional practice.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and handle a wide variety of challenges and concerns using appropriate problem-solving skills.
  • Awareness of community resources that provide support to families with varying needs (counseling, health, food, housing, employment, parenting, and other areas that impact families success).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach the courses or perform the duties effectively as described in the responsibilities above. (A teaching demonstration may be part of the interview.)
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations :

  • Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies.
  • Successful online teaching experience.
  • Spanish/English Bilingual and Biliterate skills (oral and written)
  • Special training/certification, coursework and/or teaching experience in infant/toddler programs
  • Successful teaching in state funded early education program and lab school settings
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment

Desired Discipline Specific Requirements/Licensure:

  • Possession of, or be eligible for, the California Child Development Permit at the Site Supervisor OR Director Level, AND
  • Completion of six (6) Early Childhood Education (ECE) Administration Units, AND two (2) ECE units in Adult Supervision.
