General Summary/Purpose:

The Spinal Fusion Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a motivated laboratory technician with surgical experience in animal spinal fusion models. We have several ongoing projects studying novel therapies for improving spinal fusion outcomes, including delivery of various growth factors and biological agents, stem cell-based therapies, and tissue engineering approaches. Our laboratory is also interested in problems concerning overall spine health. In particular, we aim to investigate therapies for improving vertebral bone quality in patients with conditions such as osteoporosis that may require future spinal fusion procedures. The ideal candidate would have animal surgery experience in rodent models and be proficient with animal handling, dissection, histology and immunohistochemistry. Experience with sterile techniques, cell culture techniques, basic molecular biology techniques, and microscopy would be an asset.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Performing animal surgeries, including animal handling and anesthesia. Assisting in the management of the animal colony. Basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques including use of appropriate safety precautions. Assisting laboratory personnel to conduct experiments (including dissection, histology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular assays) following standard protocols. Preparing solutions, reagents, media and stains using standard laboratory protocols and procedures. Preparing, cleaning and sterilizing laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments. Collecting data and maintaining records as required by the research protocol. The successful applicant will work closely with the post-doctoral research fellow as well as other laboratory members to maintain the laboratory and its equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

    High school diploma/GED with some science coursework. Experience working with animals is required. Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

    A certificate from technical institute, college degree or internship experience required. Experience in using micropipettes, histology, immunohistochemistry and/or molecular techniques (like ELISA, PCR) is strongly preferred. Experience in sterile tissue culture techniques would be helpful.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
