Job Summary

NIST’s Material Measurement Laboratory (MML) is developing a new vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) measurement method based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This new method has the potential to tackle long-standing problems with traditional VLE measurements by yielding high-accuracy compositions for both the liquid and vapor phases without the need to remove samples from the equilibrated mixture. This work is part of a collaborative effort by the Fluid Characterization Group and the Thermophysical Properties of Fluids Group within MML’s Applied Chemicals and Materials Division.

We are encouraging applications for a postgraduate research associate with a master’s degree to develop high-pressure NMR spectroscopy for the measurement of VLE for binary mixtures. Additionally, the work will involve careful measurements of temperature and pressure for the equilibrated mixtures. The results of the NMR measurements of VLE will be compared with measurements from traditional VLE methods when appropriate. Additionally, the NMR measurements will be compared to predictions from reference equations of state (EOS), such as those in NIST’s REFPROP database. Longer-term goals include improvement of EOS predictions for mixtures of polar + nonpolar molecules, and the rational design of drop-in replacement mixtures for working fluids.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

The particular group that needs a researcher is the Fluid Characterization Group under the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Design and conduct NMR experiments to measure VLE of binary mixtures such as methane + water over a range of temperatures and pressures.
  • Analyze data and make uncertainty determinations for the VLE measurements.
  • Present findings in oral and written formats for formal and informal audiences.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $57,000 - $60,500 and will be based upon relevant background and experience.

Benefits

The University of Colorado offers excellent benefits , including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit and ECO Pass.
