Summary/Objective

The Associate Director for Sophomore/Upperclassmen Experience is a live-in position and manages all aspects of a coeducational residence hall area housing approximately 1,050 students and supervises 4 full-time professional staff. The Associate Director will manage the day-to-day operations for their residence hall areas; consult with staff, students, and parents to solve housing problems; and coordinate area-wide activities and events. The Associate Director will also be the primary staff involved in the program administration of functional Residence Life living-learning initiatives for sophomore and upper-class students.

Essential Functions

1. Professional Staff Supervision, Selection, and Training: Select, train, and supervise staff to provide an environment conducive to living and learning. To meet these goals, this position requires the individual to meet with staff members individually and as a group to discuss their performance, the residents, and issues affecting the area. This also includes supervising staff programming, conflict mediation, and evaluation of staff performance. Furthermore, this position plays an integral part in the selection of qualified staff.

2. Sophomore/Upperclassmen Experience Program Development and Management: Provide leadership and direction for the development and implementation of sophomore and upperclassmen initiatives within the sophomore and upperclassmen areas. In conjunction with Director of Residence Life, develop a cohesive and integrated student development model that focuses on academic and co-curricular program support for sophomore and upperclassmen students. Responsibilities include the development, implementation and reporting of assessment practices for the sophomore and upperclassmen experience curriculum and providing an annual report that highlights the program’s success and challenges.

3. Assessment and Evaluation: Develop a rubric to evaluate and assess residential curriculum initiatives. Implements and analyzes annual student and staff assessment, benchmarking, performance, and retention evaluation efforts. Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation efforts for student staff performance review processes. Provide monthly assessment of programming, judicial and behavioral trends. Coordinate, implement, and interpret assessment data and retention efforts, including but not limited to the Resident Satisfaction Survey and MapWorks instruments.

4. Judicial Administration: Ensure that policies are uniformly and fairly enforced. Read and assess staff reports on alleged violations of the student code of conduct (incident report forms). Provide services as a hearing officer in violations of the Student Code of Conduct regarding the housing policies. Prepare and present in cases involving a Disciplinary Hearing Board. Prepare all paperwork and reports that detail the judicial system within the residence halls.

5. On-Call Emergency Response/After Hours Responsibility: Provide on-call emergency coverage after hours for the resident population. Respond to a variety of student needs and coordinate response network within the department, as well as with other university departments. Provide assistance with after hours and weekend room assignments, staff selection, and staff training programs.

6. Residential Community Operations: Investigate and respond to concerns and complaints of students, parents and University staff members in a manner that provides accurate information and fosters good public relations. Coordinate assigned projects such as student staff evaluation, residence hall openings and closings, break housing, or commencement housing. Summer Operations (May – August): Assist in conduct adjudication and provides follow-up care to summer residential students. Serve on special departmental committees and projects.

7. Case Management: Assist with case management for residential students designated through the Care Network including daily monitoring of incident reports, assigned Care reports, and providing staff support for weekly Care Team meetings in collaboration with the Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life.

8. Other duties as assigned: Includes serving on various committees within the university as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in student personnel administration or related field

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience post-masters, professional residence hall experience required, including experience with campus crisis management and/or on-call coverage.



Preferred Education and Experience
  • Previous supervision of graduate or full-time staff. Experience working with residential curricula and leadership development for student populations and collaborating with administrators and faculty in out-of-classroom settings.


Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • On-campus living and availability for after-hour and weekend response is required.
  • This position has “non-traditional” business hours.
  • Extreme flexibility is required to be successful in this position. Attendance at campus functions, student programs, and after-hours emergency response is often required.
