Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Center for Marine Science ( CMS ) is a multi-disciplinary research facility, which supports basic and applied marine research in the fields of oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, marine biotechnology, environmental physiology and aquaculture. Currently the Center employs a staff of 30 which support more than 60 facility researchers funded by nearly 100 different research grants. The center is located away from the main UNCW campus in a new 82,000 sq. ft. marine Science Center. This facility opened in April of 2000 and has become the main support structure for all marine science field studies for UNCW faculty and visiting scientists from other institutions. The new Marine Science Center has strengthened and expanded the UNCW Marine Science Program and collaborations with US and international marine research programs. The Center maintains 23 research vessels ranging in size from thirteen to seventy feet, one of which operates out of the facility in Key Largo, Fl. The largest research vessel, The R/V Cape Fear, operates from Norfolk, VA to the Gulf of Mexico. The Center also operates specialized equipment for marine research including, but not limited to: a Superphantom Remotely Operated Vehicle, a Continuity Temperature Meter ( CTD ), a Doppler Profiler ( ADCP ), CT Loggers, S4 current meters, pH meters, Hydrolab and several additional marine sensors.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

This Research Technician position is supported by grant funds to assist in the operation and maintenance of culture systems and conduct research in UNCW’s Shellfish Research Hatchery ( SRH ). The SRH’s mission is to conduct and facilitate research that will inform and contribute to North Carolina’s growing shellfish aquaculture industry through research, education and industry development.
This position will be responsible for the culture of shellfish, including the spawning, larval rearing, setting and grow out of shellfish, including assessments of growth and survival of shellfish lines. This position would also assist in the cultivation of microalgae, including media prep, cell counts and feeding. This position would be responsible for having an operational understanding of the hatchery systems such that the position can conduct routine monitoring (collect and record data) of water quality, flow rates, pump functions, and maintain system functionality. As part of these activities, this position would be expected to collect data and analyze as needed to meet grant obligations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School and two years of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties or equivalent combination of education and training and appropriate certifications.

Diplomas or degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

A BS in Biology or related field and one year of experience in aquaculture (either in a laboratory or commercial setting) and documented evidence of post-undergraduate training in shellfish aquaculture is strongly desired.

Graduate work in a relevant field may also be considered as suitable experience.

Knowledge and experience in basic construction and plumbing needed to maintain and modify aquatic culture systems

Knowledge and experience in aquatic animal husbandry and with aquatic culture systems

Ability to work and communicate effectively in a group environment, operate as part of a team working together to achieve safe and efficient operation of the hatchery systems

Ability to keep detailed and accurate accounts of daily operations and to report these effectively in a group environment

Ability to exercise good judgment when encountering evidence of problems in SRH systems and willingness to seek advice and help immediately from supervisor or colleague

Hatchery instrumentation is extensive and the person in this position will be expected to become proficient in the safe operation and maintenance of the systems which include seawater pumps, heat pumps, inline heaters, chillers, autoclaves, air blowers, multimedia filters, UV sterilizers, microscopes, computers and basic water monitoring devices. Modification of hatchery systems may require some use of power tools. Field operations may require use of boats
