The Environmental Health and Safety Assistant position is a non-exempt position that supports a variety of Environmental Health and Safety operations and services. The position will report directly to the Research Safety Manager but will support and assist the other groups within EHSS . This position will perform a large variety of tasks including fume hood and emergency wash equipment inspections, environmental health and safety investigations, equipment calibrations, and spill response. This position will perform many of the operations associated with the University’s Radiation Safety Program and assist with aspects of the University’s Biosafety Program and general laboratory safety.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, physics or an applicable environmental or safety related science, with a minimum of two years of college level chemistry and physics preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-2 years radiation, biological or chemical laboratory safety experience preferred.
Familiarity with environmental, health and safety sampling and monitoring equipment preferred.
Experience working with a university-based population preferred.
Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area.

Job Specific Qualifications

Understanding of chemical, biological and radiation safety and related regulations is desirable.
Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office application suite and applicable applications.
Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills.
Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.
Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized and complex work environment.
Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
Excellent organization and time management skills.
Strong data management skills.
A valid NYS Driver’s license and a driving record which meets University requirements is required.
Must be medically fit and able to wear respiratory protection.
HAZWOPER 40- or 24-Hour certification preferred.
Able to lift up to 50 lbs., and able to handle and maneuver 55-gallon drums weighing up to 800 lbs. through the use of a drum cart.

Responsibilities

Radiation Safety:
Performs tasks and activities in support of the Radiation Safety Program and the University’s NYS Department of Health issued radioactive materials license including: approval of requisitions for purchase of radioactive material and receipt of radioactive material packages; radioactive waste management, laboratory surveys and compliance inspections, radioactive source inventorying and contamination surveys, equipment calibration, dosimetry program operations, exposure monitoring, incident response, training preparation, etc.
Performs periodic radon monitoring and maintains related equipment and records.

Fume Hood and Emergency Equipment Inspections:
Conducts periodic performance inspections and rechecks of laboratory chemical fume hoods, emergency wash equipment (eye washes/safety showers), etc., and distributes status reports to area supervisors and Campus Facilities maintenance staff and others as necessary to facilitate repairs and/or to review performance trends.

Biosafety, Chemical and General Laboratory Safety:
Perform tasks and activities in support of EHSS biosafety, chemical safety and general laboratory safety programs and operations. Maintains associated data and records and creates related reports and correspondence. Develops technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance laboratory safety and compliance. Responds to laboratory safety related inquiries, requests and concerns. Participates in providing lab safety training to laboratory personnel.

Equipment Calibrations and Maintenance:
Performs functional assessments, including calibration and maintenance, of EHSS sampling and monitoring equipment used in emergency responses or in response to general environmental / occupation inquiries.

Environmental Inquiries, Inspections and Sampling:
Assists in responding to and investigating environmental, health and safety related inquiries, questions and concerns received by EHSS from the campus community, performs site investigations and conducts related sampling in response to these inquires, and prepares reports. Assists in conducting environmental health and safety related sampling, monitoring and evaluations.
Support environmental compliance operations and tasks.
