The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) at Butler University invites applications for an individual to serve as Chair for the Department of Medical Science and Physician Assistant Studies and as Program Director for the newly approved Master of Physician Assistant Studies to Doctor of Medical Science (MPAS-DMS) Bridge Program. This position is available as early as June 2021.

MS-PAS Department: The Department of Medical Science and Physician Assistant Studies at Butler University comprises three academic programs with two degree offerings. The 24-month entry-level Master of Physician Studies (MPAS) Program has been graduating physician assistants for 25 years. The 50-credit-hour Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) degree program is a fully online post-professional program that serves PAs who are interested in building on their education with more in-depth medical knowledge, as well as those who wish to develop leadership skills and business acumen to advance within their workplace. The new MPAS-DMS Bridge Program (“Bridge”) is a 14-credit-hour program designed exclusively for PAs who have graduated within the past 6 months from an ARC-PA accredited, entry-level program, and are interested in expanding their clinical knowledge and leadership skills on their path to the Doctor of Medical Science degree.

Position: This position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure track, faculty appointment with administrative duties in the College. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications at the time of hiring. The responsibilities as MS-PAS Department Chair and Bridge Program Director will include providing leadership, administrative oversight and evaluation of 1) MS-PAS department-wide matters related to faculty, budget and departmental planning and initiatives, and 2) Bridge program-wide matters related to curriculum, accreditation, assessment and admission. The Program Director/Department Chair will engage in teaching, scholarship, and service activities consistent with the typical requirements of COPHS faculty, and will serve as a member of the College Leadership Team.

Key job responsibilities include:

Department Chair, Medical Sciences and Physician Assistant Studies

Support recruitment of new faculty, assigning and evaluating department faculty workload, provide guidance in faculty development, and assess department faculty performance
Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the operation of the department and its programs which are consistent with College and University policies and procedures, in cooperation with Associate Dean for Academic and Administrative Services.
Support the MPAS Program Director in all aspects of accreditation
Support the development, implementation and assessment of the policies and procedures for admission into the MPAS, Bridge, and DMS programs in collaboration with each of the programs’ admissions committees.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with external constituencies.
Support the work of the Director of MPAS experiential education providing criteria for identification and maintenance of an appropriate number of qualified experiential sites and preceptors utilized by the program.

Program Director, Bridge Program

Provide leadership in the development, implementation and assessment of Bridge program goals

Manage the Bridge Program annual budget
Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic and Administrative Services in establishing class schedules for the Bridge Program
Supervise and evaluate the activities and performance of assigned program support staff
Provide leadership and supervision for the development, implementation and assessment of all aspects of the curriculum and admissions in the Bridge program in collaboration with Bridge program committees.
Teach as assigned, serve as an academic advisor to assigned students as needed, and engage in scholarly activities.
Contribute to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population

Qualifications:

It is strongly preferred the program director/chair be a physician assistant with a doctoral degree or a physician with experience working in PA education. The candidate must have, or be eligible for, licensure in Indiana. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching graduate medical learners and familiarity with online teaching.
