This position is for a mental health practitioner with specialized skills working with student-athletes in a diverse university setting. The Mental Health position primarily provides individual and group counseling to student athletes, consults with coaches and teams, sets up educational seminars, and conducts assessments on an as needed basis.

Duties include:

  • Conduct virtual and in-person intake assessments, treatment planning, ongoing individual therapy, group therapy, and performance consultations for student-athletes
  • Provide educational workshops, consultation, and outreach programming for student-athletes, Athletics staff, coaches, and teams
  • Provide crisis intervention, as needed, for student-athletes
  • Document clinical and consultative work in electronic health record
  • Coordinate additional needed patient care with UTC Counseling center
  • Attend sports medicine staff meetings.
  • Develop and maintain collegial relationships with Athletics staff and coaches
  • Consult, as needed, with UTC Counseling Center staff on student-athlete issues
  • Occasionally attend Counseling Center meetings


The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to function independently; strong time management skills; strong counseling skills; strong public speaking skills; crisis management and intervention skills; and ability to be an interdisciplinary team player.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree required in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology (or related field); required TN license in respective field or license-eligible within 2 years of hire; practicum, internship, or professional experience working with student-athletes in a college/university setting; experience working with diverse student population; and a valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

Four years’ experience working with student-athletes in a college/university setting; experience being a student-athlete; knowledge of best practices regarding student-athletes’ mental health and performance; knowledge of diversity issues and their impact on student-athlete wellbeing; and general knowledge of NCAA and Southern Conference guidelines.
