Purpose of Position

THERE IS NOT A SPECIFIC POSITION ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSTING . This pool is for potential and anticipated vacancies in the Residence Hall Director position in University Housing at Northern Kentucky University. While there are not currently any available positions, this pool will serve as a database of applicants should a position become available.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residence Life and/or the Associate Director of Residence Life, the Hall Director is a 12 month live-on position responsible for coordinating all aspects of student development in the residential facilities at Northern Kentucky University. The Residence Hall Director supervises 8-18 Resident Assistants and up to 2 Graduate Residence Hall Directors (varies by residential community). The Residence Hall Director is responsible for staffing, training, supervising, and evaluating paraprofessional and graduate staff. The Residence Hall Director is responsible for the development and implementation of learning strategies and programming to residential students. This position is intended as an entry-level position for new professionals joining the Housing and Residence Life profession. This is an annual 12-month live-on position typically funded for up to four years. Appointments will be made on an annual basis based on continued satisfactory performance.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Coordinate all aspects of the residence life program for the residential communities assigned. This responsibility includes supervising up to 2 Assistant Residence Hall Directors (varies by area) and Resident Assistants for their residential area, addressing performance management issues that could result in termination of staff, facilitating staff meetings to address issues that impact the residential area, conducting annual performance appraisals, recruiting undergraduate paraprofessional staff as a part of the department’s annual recruitment processes, and providing training and professional development for staff. Advise the residential hall council for the area, ensuring representation of students and collaboration to advertise and promote hall council events.

2. Serve as a hearing officer responsible for adjudication of student conduct and manage assigned conduct cases, in concert with the Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Advocacy. Support the paraprofessional staff in the implementation of the University’s conduct process and in the education of students regarding University policies, both through proactive outreach and through reactive conversations and initiatives, such as monthly Health & Safety Checks.

3. Oversee the development and implementation of a programming plan or residential curriculum for assigned community in line with departmental, divisional, and institutional mission, vision, and priorities. Ensure adherence of programming and educational plan to departmental standards including the educational or curricular standards. Coordinate assessment and evaluation of engagement opportunities that occur in the residential communities and for initiatives in the educational plan for their designated population of students.

4. Design, implement, and manage the on-call duty response for the assigned residential area. Respond to and resolve crisis situations in the residential areas. In collaboration with campus partners, develop strategies to address high-risk behavior in the residential areas related to safety, security, alcohol and other drugs, health, and visitation policies. Serve as the Residence Life Coordinator on-call for the department (as required), providing support and supervision for Resident Assistants and Peer Mentors serving on call for University Housing. Liaise as appropriate with parents and families of students who are involved in disciplinary and/or crisis situations, as directed by the Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Associate Director of Residence Life, and/or the Director of University Housing.

5. Serve as the chair and/or member of departmental committees for the purpose of supporting annual initiatives and processes; serve in assigned collateral or project roles during summer months, as assigned.

6. Coordinate with the Associate Director of Housing Operations, the Housing Assignments Coordinator, the Facilities Specialist, and other Housing Operations staff to open, operate, and close the residential areas.

7. Manage residence life budgets up to $5,000. Oversee the purchasing process for the assigned residential area, approving expenditures for staff to ensure alignment with the department’s strategic priorities and University Procurement rules and regulations. Reconcile and turn in spending reports monthly, as required.

8. Assist in department, division, and institution intiatives in the recruitment and retention of students. Assist with other University Housing marketing and promotional activities as instructed and required.

9. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional work experience required.Master’s degree strongly preferred by start date.Master’s degree preferred fields to include Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Counselor Education, Organizational Behavior, Business Administration, Management, or Psychology.

Preferred experience includes: live-on higher education housing experience, experience mitigating crises and conflicts, experience supervising paraprofessional staff, experience with higher education student conduct, leadership skills, training in diversity/inclusion/interculturalism, and experience managing budgets.
