Purpose of Position

The Business Officer is engaged in the day-to-day administration of finance related activities and reports to management, provides fiscal and other management tasks for the Institute for Health Innovations and the Office of Research, Grants & Contracts. Work procedures and activities must be conducted in accordance with local, state, federal, and university financial regulations.

The Business Officer should have a high level of expertise in Federal research compliance protections for humans subjects, animal care, and biosafety; Federal legal Term and Conditions for all contact and grant awards; NKU HR regulations pertaining to NKU personnel on grant awards; grant development and management; multi-faceted budget preparations; external funding searches; SAP financial
systems; multiple internal database systems; and multiple federal agency interactive software systems for accurate proposal activities.

In addition, Business Officer will continuously build relationships with external officials from Government and private
funding agencies is an essential role. These relationships and staff technical expertise about the Federal Office of
Management and Budget Circulars grant funding regulations translate into additional grant funding. The Business Officer
must have the technical and interpersonal skills to facilitate proposal strategy, design, writing, and manage review
sessions with groups of faculty as they prepare large-scale grant proposals for external funding.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide fiscal management for the Institute of Health Innovations, monitoring and reporting on operating, foundation, and grant revenues and expenses across all accounts. Assure that all NKU accounts, work procedures and activities meet university, state, and federal financial regulations and audit criteria.

Manage all aspects of assigned grant proposals and grant awards to NKU including, fostering relationships with and maintaining expertise about federal/state/local/private funding agencies, proposal development assistance (forms and budgets) to faculty, budget development, electronic submissions, co-negotiate legal acceptable terms and conditions for NKU on awarded projects, re-budgeting periodically as required, maintaining financial compliance with OMB Circulars, create grant amendments and sub-awards to other universities, monitor sub-awards throughout grant lifecycle per federal regulations, ensure every grant award maintains federal regulations pertaining to Human Subjects, Animal Care, Biosafety, and Radiation Safety where appropriate.

Assist IHI leadership with forecasting, comprehension, and management of Institute budgets, revenues, grant-funding, private donations, and contracts. Provide relevant SAP training/assistance as needed to IHI staff.

Facilitate work groups of interdisciplinary faculty to create strong large-scale grant proposals.

Outreach to faculty and staff pertaining to external funding and federal regulations. Speak at department meetings, individually, and as requested by Deans, Chairs and Directors of programs.

Other duties as assigned by either department.
