The David Owsley Museum of Art welcomes applications for a Curator of Education responsible for managing all museum education, including the development and implementation of creative programs, events, and activities.
The position also reinforces the university’s strategic plan by administering several outreach programs, including the museum’s established partnership with Muncie Community Schools (Goal 3) and engaging diverse audiences (Goal 5). Position Function
Develop, oversee, and execute the museum’s public outreach and collaborate with other museum staff to engage the general public, including K-12 students, community members of all ages, and Ball State faculty, staff, and students through a broad range of inclusive programs that attract diverse audiences.
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, museum studies or related discipline.
Minimum Experience
One year of experience planning, developing, and implementing education programs in a museum setting or comparable organization.
Minimum Other
Familiarity with primary and secondary school education curricula and working knowledge of museum education and object-based theories of learning
Excellent public speaking, writing, and editing skills
Ability to maintain excellent working relationships with a diverse range of individuals, including staff, faculty, students, volunteers, community partners, and the public with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism, and discretion
Proficiency with basic computer programs and current social media, as well as audience evaluation and implementation of visitor surveys
Ability to assess and manage multiple competing priorities and work well under pressure, with excellent time management, organizational, and creative problem-solving skills
Ability to adhere to museum policies and support management decisions in a professional manner
Ability to take part in programs outside of normal office hours, including on evenings and weekends
Ability to work effectively in a changing environment, including changing work demands, procedures, technology, or priorities
Authorization to work in the US

Preferred Education
Master’s degree in art history, museum education, museum studies or related discipline.
Preferred Experience
Three to five years of experience planning, developing, and implementing education programs in an art museum.
Preferred Other
Previous experience in a college/university museum
Past experience with primary and secondary teacher training
Experience working with underserved groups and with the development of tours and programs, including those for visitors with special needs

Create, develop, manage and present the museum’s public programs and activities pertaining to the permanent collection and exhibitions, including but not limited to gallery talks, Final Fridays, receptions, and other museum-sponsored events, such as guest lectures, musical programs, workshops, etc.

Coordinate and conduct gallery tours and virtual museum experiences for both university and public visitors. Gather and analyze tour data for the purposes of creating museum metrics.
