The University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Surgery’s Division of Healthcare Simulation Science (HCSS), is recruiting a candidate who has a doctoral degree, regional or national reputation in the development of human physiology models using physics-based mathematical modelling and machine learning techniques. This is a full-time, 12-month service period (Jul 1 – Jun 30), non-tenured research track position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor for an initial term of three years. The salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience, with an expected start date in summer 2021.

 

This position will function independently and collaboratively write and successfully compete for extramural funding.  This position will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills, become a Principal Investigator, and direct interprofessional research teams.

 

This position will be involved in the full spectrum of educational innovations and strategic projects in HCSS.  This position will propose and lead new initiatives and guide programs that have national and international significance.

 

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

 

Responsibilities

  • Apply modeling or quantitative analysis to forecast physiologic events and patient states for educational and clinical applications;
  • Establish a core area of research that is relevant to improving the safety, quality and efficiency of healthcare;
  • Lead small and large scale research studies from start to finish with assistance from HCSS research staff;
  • Lead with the development of simulated human physiologic states using mathematical models and machine learning;
  • Disseminate findings at national conferences and through journal publications;
  • Assist with the Implementation of safety innovations in the applied setting through collaboration, both within and outside UW Medicine;
  • Serve as an internal expert in their respective research area to advise HCSS;
  • Provide instructional lectures in their area of expertise to staff, students, practicing healthcare providers, and healthcare leaders;
  • Write, review, or comment on documents, such as proposals, test plans, or procedures;
  • Train faculty in techniques or principles related to these activities;
  • Recommend changes to improve simulations, using knowledge of inadequate or harmful factors;

 

Qualifications

  • PhD or foreign equivalent;
  • Background in biophysics, multi-scale modeling, mathematical modeling, and physiology are critical to this position;
  • This position is open to candidates from different domains who are passionate about applying physiology engines to develop robust and realistic training tools for healthcare providers.
