Associate Professor and Director of the International Longevity Center (ILC)- USA
The Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center (CAC), a university-wide center for research and education and policy for aging societies, is directed by Linda P. Fried, MD,MPH, DeLamar Professor of Epidemiology and Dean of the Columbia UniversityMailman School of Public Health. The CAC is anchored in the Mailman School of PublicHealth because accomplishing health in longer lives is central to experiencing the opportunities of longer lives, for all. Its faculty conduct research along the spectrum from cells to population health to policy to societal transformations needed, and educate undergraduate, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The CAC is the home of theInternational Longevity Center USA (ILC-USA), founded in 1990 by world-renownedgerontologist and psychiatrist, Robert N. Butler, MD (1927-2010) to advocate for the needs and rights of older adults through research and social and policy action, and our aim is to build on this unique intellectual legacy. The ILC is a member of the ILC GlobalAlliance, the multinational consortium of ILC member organizations based in 16countries and hosts the secretariat of the ILC Global Alliance (ILC-GA). The CAC is currently recruiting a senior leader in the field of policy and/or practice in aging to be director of the ILC-USA. The successful candidate will work closely with the faculty of the Butler CAC, and report to the director of the Robert N. Butler ColumbiaAging Center to shape the priorities of the ILC-USA. Generally, these priorities focus on identifying, fostering, and building the policy and practice infrastructure, programs for practice and societal institutions to enable the health and social capital of longer lives and create a society best suited for optimizing healthy long lives for all, accomplishing aThird Demographic Dividend and the flourishing of long lived populations and societies.We would prioritize candidates with knowledge, experience and skills in public health and medical care systems, social capital and/or urban health disparities and aging who would be a leader in building networks and advocacy to shape impactful programs that would have local, national and global implications.The candidate will also have the following specific responsibilities: • S/he will develop and implement policy priorities and/or practice agenda for the ILC-USA, both local, national and global, and provide an effective platform to disseminate research and establish the ILC’s leadership with policymakers and other key international and national stakeholders. This will represent a commitment to translating science into both policy and practice and contributing to significant societal improvement. • S/he will represent the ILC-USA in national and international fora and identify and build strategic partnerships, driven by the mission of the CAC to advocate for health across the life course and to ensure that increasing global longevity is an opportunity for societies to harness. • S/he will represent the public profile of the ILC-USA, promoting the evidence base that demographic change is an opportunity. The role requires a broad-minded, multi-faceted, visionary and experienced and effective leader with a combination of scholarship, research, policy and fundraising success in the area of aging and longevity. The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge and interest in current policy trends as well as vision and influence for implementing novel policy and practice. The successful candidate should have a distinguished record in health in aging and in some of the following areas (1) development, implementation, and dissemination of translational research, (2) policy analysis, reform and innovation, (3) program development, and (4) strategic communications on policy priorities. The candidate will be responsible for delivering on the policy vision of the ILC-USA and manage institutional relationships relating to this role. Must be adept at securing financial support for programmatic priorities, and some experience with and understanding of philanthropic funding and of the global development community. Must have a capacity to foster collaborative and productive relationships among allied organizations, advisers, and faculty and staff of the Mailman School of Public Health and across Columbia University.It is desirable that the individual has familiarity and linkages with New York City-focussedaging networks and have experience in federal and/or global policy of aging. The position will report to the Director of the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center and be appointed as a faculty member in the Butler CAC If appropriate, the successful candidate may also be eligible to hold a faculty position at associate or full professor in a department of the Mailman School of Public Health best suited to his/her professional background. The level of faculty appointment will be commensurate with the academic standing of the candidate. Minimum Qualifications Doctoral or professional terminal degree. Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications: • internationally recognized thought leader in the field of aging, ideally with health-related experience and with a contribution to research in this field • experience working with start-up organizations • 15 years or more of progressive management experience Performance will be assessed annually by the Director of the Butler CAC and will undergo a formal 3-year review of accomplishments and goals. Compensation will be both competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience. The Director will hold an endowed chair for the ILC-USADirector; this will fund a component of salary.
