Job Details

The Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) Program within the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) at Butler University invites applications for a Program Director. This position is available as early as April 2021.

The DMS program provides an avenue for those physician assistants (PAs) interested in expanding their understanding of medical knowledge, developing leadership and business skills, and promoting lifelong learning. All courses are offered online, allowing students to continue to work within their communities while taking classes and working towards the achievement of an advanced degree in a way that best suits their personal schedule. The flexible program allows PAs to build on their previous education and experiences with a continued focus on primary care.

This position is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment with administrative duties in the College. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications at the time of hiring. The Program Director will be responsible for providing programmatic leadership, direct student advisement, curricular oversight and assessment, programmatic evaluation, and oversight of the admission criteria and process for the program. The Program Director will engage in teaching, scholarship, and service activities consistent with the typical requirements of COPHS faculty. The Program Director will serve as a member of the College Leadership Team.

Key job responsibilities include:

Development, administration, continuous review and analysis of the program’s policies and procedures.
Recruitment of qualified faculty and provision of leadership, direction, and mentorship to faculty on matters of curriculum and instruction.
Development and implementation of strategies to ensure a continuous stream of highly qualified student applicants into the program, sufficient to grow the program and encourage diversity, equity, and objectivity in student recruitment and selection at the national level.
Advisement of students, and fostering of effective communication between the Administration of the University and the College, faculty, staff and students.
Development and application of effective assessment strategies for curricular and programmatic improvement, ensuring student learning outcomes are met and best educational practices in the field are known and applied by faculty.
Management of the DMS Program’s annual budget, applying strategies to support long-term sustainability.
Fostering of interdisciplinary and interprofessional participation in education and service among faculty, staff, and students.

It is strongly preferred the program director be a physician assistant with a doctorate degree or a physician with experience working with PAs. The candidate must have, or be eligible for, licensure in Indiana. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching graduate medical learners and familiarity with online teaching. Applications and inquiries may be directed to: COPHSsearch@butler.edu

With just over 5,000 students, we’re relatively small as far as universities go. That’s a good thing—it means classes are more personally engaging and professors are always available to help.

But in terms of opportunity, Butler University is about as big as it gets. Indianapolis is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Midwest. As residents, Butler students can plug right into the real-world through internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, public performances, and community partnerships. These experiences provide working knowledge and skills that students need to excel after college.

A career at Butler University means so much more than a job.  Join the dedicated, innovative, and supportive community of faculty and staff that is moving Butler Beyond.
