Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, maintain an assigned group of classrooms, offices and related facilities in a clean and orderly manner. Incumbents provide work direction and guidance to other custodial operations personnel and participate in operations and custodial duties, or work independently at an assigned location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Sweep, scrub, mop and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas.

Clean, dust and polish furniture and woodwork including desks, cabinets and tables; wash windows, chalkboards and walls.

Empty and clean waste receptacles and pencil sharpeners and recycle containers; pick up paper; pick up trash containers and empty into large bins.

Clean restrooms including floors, walls, fixtures, appliances and mirrors; restock supplies; polish metal fixtures.

Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up furniture for special events, activities and meetings; move and set up athletic equipment.

Perform minor repairs to buildings, fixtures and equipment; replace lights, ceiling tiles, and light diffusers; clean and adjust shades and blinds; adjust desks and other furniture; report other repair and maintenance needs and safety, sanitary and fire hazards.

Write work orders to request repair of facilities and equipment.

Turn lights on and off; unlock and lock doors and windows; assure security of assigned areas.

Remove trash from shrubs around assigned areas.

Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.

Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment.

Perform related duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Remove and transport bio-hazardous wastes for appropriate disposal.

Remove substances from painted surfaces such as doors and concrete pillars; remove substances from and wash walkways and stairs.

Remove tape from painted surfaces such as doors and concrete pillars.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, writing boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures, including safe driving practices as well as traffic laws and regulations.
  • Removal and transport of bio-hazardous waste.


ABILITY TO:
  • Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
  • Maintain materials, tools and equipment assigned in clean working order and provide proper security.
  • Observe and report need for maintenance and repair; perform minor repairs as required.
  • Lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Work independently with little direction; meet schedules and time lines; plan and organize work.
  • Operate a personal computer to enter and retrieve data consistent with requirements of the position.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Sufficient training and experience to perform the required duties.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work includes indoor and outdoor environment; subject to frequent lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 75 pounds; pushing, pulling and bending; potential hazards from bio-hazardous wastes and fumes from cleaning chemicals; positions in this class may be assigned to work during the evening.
