Position Information

This is a full-time, temporary position.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Under the immediate supervision of the Charge Nurse and/or the Chief of Medical Services, interviews patients as to symptoms and complaints, takes vial signs, prepares patients for examination by primary care providers and assists with examinations and treatments. Cleans and autoclaves equipment and instruments. Cleans and stocks patient care rooms. Monitors the individuals who come into the Student Health Center with temperature checks and other symptoms of interest. Cleans waiting room lobby after each patient leave. Assists all Student Health Center staff. Performs phlebotomy, administers medications and immunizations as ordered and performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Health services (in order to perform receptionist functions) and daily clinic operations; medical assistance certification process; medical terminology; working knowledge of aseptic techniques and requirements; working knowledge of the uses application and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above; basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology appropriate to the duties assigned; understanding of potential hazards or complications resulting from administration of medications and knowledge on how to initiate emergency procedures; working knowledge of California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants.

Abilities: The Medical Assistant must demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications in a variety of manners including by intramuscular, intradermal or subcutaneous methods and by inhalation; ability to adhere to proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; ability to maintain patient confidentiality; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services such as the standard tests and limited procedures described above; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients

Preferred Qualifications : Preferred Experience: Six months or more of experience in the health care field

Special working conditions: The position activities may require the use of the following equipment, machinery, tools, vehicles or office equipment: Autoclave, needles and syringes, EKG, IVAC, thermometer, Snellen eye chart, scales, sphygmomanometer, ear irrigator and other miscellaneous health related instruments and equipment

Certifications: Certificate of completion of an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education within the Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

Responsibilities

65% - Clinical Assistance: With increasingly more responsibility, escorts patients, prepares them for examination or treatment and assists in examination; fills out laboratory or x-ray requisitions, assures accurate identification of specimens, forms, etc.; readies examination treatment rooms for patients; sets up instrument trays and equipment; assists in minor surgery using aseptic techniques when required; takes and records measurements of height, weight, temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration; performs peak flow measurements; may perform routine screening tests for vision and hearing; provides routine care for patients in Observation Room, including observing, recording and reporting patient's condition; enters appropriate comments on progress notes of patients' medical charts; assists in obtaining and properly identifying blood, urine and other laboratory specimens, including performing simple, routine lab procedures; assists in preparing and positioning patients for x-ray studies; performs phlebotomy, if certified; administers injections (IM/SC/ID), administers medications as ordered by ID/IM/SC route as well as by inhalation, topically, orally, sublingually or by other methods; performs and mounts electrocardiograms and audiograms as required; performs phlebotomy; removes sutures/staples; applies dressings; removes splints/casts and other devices; performs specimen collection by non-invasive techniques such as throat cultures, nasal swabs; performs CLIA-waived testing ordered by a clinician; performs other duties as assigned by supervising physician as long as within the scope of practice for a Medical Assistant as defined by the Medical Board of California.

25% - Preparation and Maintenance of Supplies and Equipment: Washes, cleans, wraps and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment; makes up solutions for cold sterilization and antiseptic purposes; inventories clinical supplies, laundry, instruments and equipment; stocks treatment, examination rooms, primary care providers' offices and medical supply rooms with all necessary equipment; coordinates linen and lab coat usage with outside supplier; inventories and maintains stock purchasing/control for all clinical supplies

5% - Clerical Assistance: Performs clerical tasks for ancillary health services; provides clerical assistance for various activities such as health education fairs and immunization programs; provides back-up front office coverage including answering telephones, making appointments and responding to students' questions about health services

5% - Participation in Other Student Health Center and Student Affairs Activities: Attends Student Health Center staff meetings; attends in-service training programs; assists in activities such as New Student Orientation, registration, commencement, etc.; may participate in various University committees as appropriate; assists in orientation of new student assistants hired to work in the Student Health Center; may attend off-campus meetings for professional development.
