The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy consists of two schools, the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management, and offers an academic experience unlike any other. Heinz College prepares students with a unique ability to conduct careful and objective analysis of relevant data, to understand and demonstrate the power of information technology, and to lead and implement change in managerial and policy contexts.

This leads us to search for an Assistant Dean of Diversity, Inclusion, Climate and Equity with the capacity to provide leadership, strategic oversight, and practical programmatic guidance at Heinz College’s top-ranked schools of Information Systems and Public Policy. Working within an intersectional framework, you will provide direction, coordination, consultation, partnership, and vision in support of the College’s efforts to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive learning and work environment for all members of its community.

This is a hands-on role dedicated to building College capacities and increasing awareness of DICE issues and best practices among students, staff and faculty. The Assistant Dean of DICE will be responsible for tracking progress toward the goals set forth in the Heinz College DEI strategic plan and communicating that progress to the College community.

Candidates should be passionate about incorporating the values of diversity, inclusion, climate and equity into Heinz College programs and activities. You will work in collaborative and dynamic ways with diverse stakeholder constituencies consisting of faculty, staff, students, alumni and various internal and external College and University partners.

We value flexibility, excellence, and passion within Heinz College. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at Carnegie Mellon. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to optimally interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for (further) developing holistic and integrated plans for DICE strategies and initiatives to ensure that every member of the College community is afforded the opportunity to study and work in an environment free of biases based on ancestry, color, race, ability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, family status, or any other protected class or identity.
  • Serve as a mentor/advisor to Heinz College students and alumni. Create student programming around DICE-related issues; oversee and advise student-led initiatives.
  • Provide DICE-related assistance, information, resources, and referrals as appropriate to staff, faculty, and students.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on issues related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Partner with Program Directors to oversee the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute (JSI), IT Lab and other College programs designed to prepare rising seniors for an advanced degree and ultimately for careers. More information on these programs is available at https://www.heinz.cmu.edu/about/diversity.
  • Collaborate with the Heinz College admissions staff to identify, implement, and track the success of outreach strategies for increased diversity among prospective students.
  • Create opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage with community organizations where equity and inclusion are prioritized.
  • Partner with Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer for the University and the other college leads to share best practices and coordinate DICE efforts.
  • Assist Human Resources, College hiring managers, and College leadership in developing new pipelines for diverse talent and in building workplace retention policies that prioritize a diverse workforce.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Finance and Operations to enhance, develop and implement employee professional development initiatives to support a climate of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Develop metrics and dashboards to ensure accountability, tracking, and monitoring of equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts and recommend and assist in the development of improvements in practice and policy that will reduce barriers to achieving its DICE goals and aspirations.
  • Analyze efforts and report back to the community – both through the website (in partnership with Marketing) and other channels to ensure transparency, welcome feedback, and create spaces for open communication.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and current trends in diversity, equity and inclusion and use that knowledge to inform program and policy development work.
