Work Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm (some evenings and weekends required).
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,583.00 - $10,500.00 monthly

Typical Activities
Under the supervision of the Vice President of Information Technology Services & Chief Information Officer, the Director of Academic Technologies and Innovation/Chief Academic Technology Officer leads the faculty-facing Department of Academic Technologies and Innovation (ATI), whose mission is to provide leadership and support for the effective and innovative use of technology in teaching by California State University, San Bernardino's (CSUSB's) faculty. The ATI director leads twenty ATI staff in the provision of world-class customer service to their CSUSB faculty clients. The ATI Director also provides direction and vision for the successful deployment and integration of web and media-based technologies online and in the classroom, including emerging learning technology tools appropriate to pedagogy in instruction, and provides support for digital media and distance education initiatives. The director oversees a staff of instructional designers, instructional technologists, and information technology consultants, who work with faculty directly and in collaboration with the Faculty Center for Excellence (FCE), the Teaching Resource Center (TRC), the Office of the Provost, and CSUSB's academic Deans and department chairs.

The incumbent of this MPP (management personnel program) administration position will lead transformative projects using information technology that facilitates effective pedagogy and academic success and encourages faculty's technology-facilitated research endeavors. Responsibilities include: Effectively and efficiently leading and managing ATI's staff to deliver world-class service to faculty through collaboratively developed technology solutions for academic and research purposes; collaboratively developing ideas on the effective use of technology for teaching, learning, and research; nurturing departmental projects from idea to deployment; and developing and maintaining ATI staff's knowledge of innovative teaching and learning technologies such as CSUSB's learning management system (LMS), Blackboard; pedagogically effective third-party applications which integrate with the LMS; multimedia technologies for video, audio, and immersive learning; student response systems; and e-portfolio software for faculty and students.

The ATI Director must work in a collaborative, collegial, and courteous manner with the leadership and staff of the FCE; the TRC; the Library; the offices of the Provost, Deans, and department chairs; and with faculty and students across the institution. The ATI Director actively collaborates with other academic areas to identify, develop, and promote effective uses of learning technologies.

The following responsibilities include:

Department Leadership and Management

  • Work with the Vice President/Chief Information Officer and other Division of Information Technology Services leaders to develop and execute ITS's strategic plan, as well as ATI's annual operational plan in alignment with ITS's and CSUSB's strategic plans
  • Create and maintain a culture of faculty client-centeredness and dedication to world-class customer service within ATI, and lead the effort for ATI's continuous improvement in these areas
  • Foster good morale, team spirit, and dedication to the goals of the ITS strategic plan among ATI's twenty staff members
  • Lead the development and deployment of systems to measure and assess ATI performance and productivity
  • Manage ATI's budget, hiring, contracts, and partnerships
  • Design, maintain, and execute a fair and effective staff performance evaluation process
  • Support ATI staff members responsible for the Accessible Technology Initiative and CSUSB's accessible media services
  • Support the Director and staff of ATI's xREAL Lab in execution of its vision, mission, objectives, and strategies
  • Support the ATI Assistant Director in developing and managing multimedia production (including video and audio) for faculty and campus events
  • Support the ATI Assistant Director in researching, evaluating, recommending, and designing classrooms and interactive learning spaces, and public areas of the campus
  • Collaborate on and/or lead the production of public-facing ITS/ATI events such as TechFest, town halls, TechTalks, and technology-related conferences
  • Assist other ITS leaders in the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures regarding academic software and hardware, reporting, database access, copyright and license compliance, backups, system security, project plans, and status reports
  • The incumbent will work collaboratively with ITS staff and administrators to provide project management services to the Division and the campus. This includes working collaboratively with project managers and teams to promote standard project management methodologies and artifacts. The incumbent will serve as the central point of contact for project status reporting to all stakeholders. And perform other related duties as assigned.

Academic Technology Services to Faculty
  • Provide leadership for innovation and support of in all areas of academic technologies including CSUSB's online programs, technology-mediated learning, and strategies to promote, enhance and enrich teaching through current and emerging technologies
  • Foster cooperative relationships with all members of a diverse academic community
  • Facilitate faculty's outreach with academic technologies to members of the diverse Inland Empire community, for which CSUSB is an anchor institution
  • Oversee effective promotion of ATI's services to CSUSB's tenure-line and adjunct faculty members and academic leadership
  • Manage the development and presentation of effective and timely workshops on academic technology topics of high interest and utility to faculty
  • Manage academic technology application contracts and work with consultants and vendors of hardware and or/software products to evaluate and troubleshoot products and services


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • A Master's degree is required.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience in an academic setting required.
  • Experience in leading and managing organizational units using strategic plans and alignment of operations with goals through assessment is required.
  • Demonstrated experience of integrating technology into the teaching/learning process is required.
  • Demonstrated competence in developing innovative instructional technology projects is required.
  • A history of managing and supervising complex ITS operations within established timelines is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • At least two years of tertiary-level teaching experience required; at least five years of full-time teaching as a tenured faculty member at a tertiary-level institution is preferred.
  • At least one year's experience of managing supervisors is preferred.
