Job Description:
Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Use knowledge of federal immigration regulations related to F-1 and J-1 status to independently advise and educate F-1 international students, J-1 exchange visitors, dependents, and academic departments on matters directly related to federal immigration regulations. Evaluate, analyze, and compare various courses of action F-1 international students and J-1 exchange visitors may take, and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. International Student Advisors exercise considerable independent judgement and discretion when officially representing MNSU, Mankato to the Department of Homeland Security (SEVP, USCIS, CBP, etc.) and the Department of State. Help formulate, implement, and maintain institutional policies, business procedures, and information systems that relate to F-1 international students and J-1 exchange visitors. International Student Advisors also make independent decisions when advising on academic support resources, adjustment issues, personal and family concerns, and emergency situations. They develop, conduct, and evaluate educational presentations, workshops, programs, and activities related to immigration regulations and cultural adjustment. International Student Advisors also assist with orientation and Kearney Center events and programs.


Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, International Education, Student Affairs or closely related field (conferred on an official transcript at the time of application).
  • Minimum one academic year of F-1 immigration advising and experience as a Designated School Official.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal regulations relating to F & J visa holders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience working collaboratively with others and/or departments.
  • Personal or professional experience in international or study abroad experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Self-directed with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities.
  • Advising of international students in higher education setting.


Other Requirements:
Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
