Summary:
The Department of Languages and Cultures at Utah Valley University invites applications for a Lecturer Instructor position in Chinese beginning July 1, 2021. The courses to be taught are designed as an advanced language pathway for high school students who have passed the AP Language and Culture exam. A successful candidate must be qualified to teach upper division (3000 level) literature and culture, deliver instruction face-to-face to high school students, and collaboratively partner with the high school instructor for lesson delivery and assessment. Sections of the Chinese Bridge Program will be offered at high school in Utah County. The instructor's schedule will be tied to the high schools' schedules. Candidate will teach once a week each section assigned and schedules will be coordinated between the high school locations. The instructor must drive between locations on instructional days.

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited institution with a Master’s degree.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skills, expertise, and experience in teaching Chinese.
  • Extensive knowledge of subject matter and course content of the courses to be taught, which may include courses emphasizing both theory and practice; instructional strategies and techniques; management, motivation, evaluation of students; evaluation of instruction (peer and self); curriculum development and program assessment; effective human relations skills and communication techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate the delivery and assessment of courses with faculty partners at the secondary schools.
  • Ability to apply general principles to specific conditions, follow written and oral procedures and instructions.
  • Extensive knowledge of Chinese cultures and civilizations.
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday with variable hours.


Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Chinese.
Three years’ minimum successful experience teaching Chinese language at college levels and/or extensive experience in the field of Chinese.


Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to perform teaching work in the classroom and the ability to commute easily from one school to another.
