POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Human Resources (HR) is a member of the President's Leadership Team and has the responsibility for leading the development and implementation of policies, practices and comprehensive human resource strategies for faculty and staff. As the chief HR leader for the campus, the Director continually improves human resources systems and ensures the delivery of high-quality services to the faculty and staff of the University in a manner consistent with the strategic plan, vision, mission, and values of the University. 

 

The Director is the President’s principal advisor in regard to human resources policy and is the primary guide and support in regard to human resources matters for the University’s vice presidents and deans. The Director serves as the University’s chief negotiator for its local labor contract and the primary representative of the University in developing and maintaining productive relationships with the leadership of the bargaining unit which represents University employees. The Director is responsible for providing effective employment-related services to a large and diverse workforce and for overseeing the management of the human resources information technology database systems, including the administration of personnel files and other data retention and reporting requirements for faculty and staff.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for designing, developing, and implementing all human resources management functions.
  • Partner with the President, vice presidents, deans, chairpersons, directors, staff and faculty in achieving the mission and goals of the University, and their respective departments.
  • Responsible for hiring, promotion, release of employees, and other employment status change related activities.
  • Responsible for administering Fisk’s self-funded benefits program.
  • Serve as a trusted and strategic thought partner for leaders across the university.
  • Oversee an effective human resources unit.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to a team of human resource professionals committed to excellence and customer service.
  • Create and/or maintain a training program for university employees.
  • Maintain and update HR electronic systems and software (electronic personal action forms, electronic performance appraisal systems, electronic training software, etc.)
  • Send regular and pertinent campus communiques to update employees on changes and updates.
  • Serve as the university’s primary contact when dealing with bargaining unit matters.
  • Serve as primary contact for vendor and HR business relationships.

 

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • In partnership with the University’s Title IX Coordinator, helps ensure the university’s compliance with Title IX harassment and discrimination prevention, including overseeing all complaints of sex discrimination involving faculty and staff employees and identifies any problems that arise during the review of such complaints.
  • Maintain a master employment file.
  • Monitor pay band structure for university employees.
  • Counsel supervisory positions on employment related strategy.
  • Maintain an up-to-date university organizational chart.
  • Serve as the university’s weather watchman and produce a recommendation to the President when appropriate
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the President.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Provides managerial oversight to the following areas: recruitment and retention, classification and compensation, training and organizational development, benefits design and administration, employee and labor relations, leave management, policies and compliance and workers' compensation and unemployment benefits. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or other related field or equivalent work experience to equal degreed program. Master’s a plus.

Experience: Ten (10) years or more of progressive leadership experience in human resources. Must have a history of executive-level human resources leadership experience and have worked within a unionized environment, preferable within a university setting.

Licenses or Certificates: SHRM-SCP or SPHR strongly preferred.
