Director of Continuing Education

As Director of Continuing Education (CE), primary responsibilities include directing the implementation, delivery, and evaluation of corporate and professional education, adult education, enrichment, and youth education outreach programs in an efficient manner. In addition to supervision of staff and instructors, management and operations is also a focus for this position. This role will also lead the unit in project implementation, project development and enrollment and preparing reports, marketing and recruiting for new programs, planning involving multiple departments, as well as relationship building and representation within the community. Penn State Abington's CE unit provides supplemental education, professional development, certificates and licensure as well as youth programming and enrichment programming and serves the region's adult, professional, and continuing education needs through targeted programs.

The Director of Continuing Education reports directly to the Chancellor and is a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet. The Director supervises a staff of three, including an Assistant Director, Program Manager and Administrative Coordinator.

The Continuing Education department operates programs within three main verticals: healthcare, business/IT, and youth/education. In addition to overseeing the staff and the program strategy for the department, the Director will need to develop a strategy for, and manage a portfolio of CE programs within the business/IT area.

Strategic Leadership: Provide leadership and communicate strategic direction and mission to encourage creative solutions for future growth that fit Abington's mission within the current geographic, demographic and economic environment.
  • Conduct market research to identify key strategic opportunities
  • New program development
  • Introduce new models of learning and delivery using benchmarking and technologies
  • Work with Commonwealth Campus CE Directors and the Statewide Director to collaborate and share resources, as needed


Grow Contract Training: Manage implementation of a corporate strategy for the unit that results in “business-to-business” program growth.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with corporate clients, internal stakeholders (Academic Affairs, Career Development, Alumni, Development, Student Affairs, Admissions), and external community organizations with a focus on the strategic use of resources
  • Strategically seek relationships and collaborations with those external and internal to Penn State


Fiscal and Operational Leadership and Management: Provide high level of financial oversight, through budgeting, strategic revenue generation and management of staff (operational and instructional)
  • Ensure the strategic direction and implementation aligned with revenue goals, current resources, and potential opportunities
  • Make certain the unit complies with Penn State policies and develop procedures to ensure compliance
  • Working with the program staff create and manage program budgets and working with Finance Dept. oversee annual CE budgets, quarterly reporting to the Chancellor
  • Working with the administrative coordinator, approve all departmental expenses
  • Create a CE advisory board
  • Transition to a CRM
  • Supervise staff
  • Responsible for WorkLion and Workday HR functions and tasks as they relate to CE staff, teaching, and wage payroll positions that support CE programs


As part of the fiscal and operational leadership and management responsibilities, this position will work with stakeholders to identify a mission/vision and identify an operational plan to accomplish a shared vision, promoting inclusion and diversity, identifying sustainable financial goals, review contracts, agreements and budgets, model Penn State values integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence, and community, supporting teamwork on programs and projects, discovery of new program markets/concepts and identifying staff to lead project according to their current portfolio and strengths and talents.

The Director will develop, analyze, and manage the budget for the assigned areas of responsibility and oversee staff, including hiring, evaluating, and training. In addition to management functions, the Director directly participates in program development, partnership development, and recruiting efforts and is expected to be available on evenings and weekends as needed.

Outreach: Assume leadership role and support to maximize outreach opportunities effectively and create awareness regionally, nationally and internationally for the institution.
  • Lead internal and external teams in innovative program development and implementation that are mission aligned
  • Work with CE staff to develop collaborative partnerships with academic units and external organizations that leads to programming that will serve regional and national stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with academic and non-academic units of the college to develop and present seminars, online courses, conferences and programs for the general public, professional and governmental agencies, and businesses


Preferred qualifications include a master's degree or higher plus at least five years of continuing, extended, or professional education or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate should also have a demonstrated history of and commitment to data-informed decision making, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, a strong customer service orientation, a proven attention to detail, knowledge of applicable policies and procedures, evidence of experience collaborating with economic partners, the community, faculty and staff, and familiarity with CRM software. Other desirable traits are a passion for continuing and professional education, higher education, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work as a team member.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to the clearances.
