Bennington College seeks a technical instructor in sound/music for a full time appointment to work closely with faculty, staff, and students. For 33 weeks per year, responsibilities include providing technical assistance to students and faculty in support of the sound and music curriculum, which includes concerts and a weekly music workshop. The technical instructor provides safety training and oversight as well as 1:1 instruction on software, equipment, processes and techniques, oversees audio equipment, inventory, and studio scheduling, trains and oversees student workers, performs minor repairs to equipment as needed, and responds to faculty requests. The technical instructor also works with faculty and students on audio related needs for drama and dance productions, including sound equipment set-up and maintenance and mentoring/oversight of student sound designers. The candidate must have a strong background in both analog and digital audio, experience with studio recording and sound systems for live performance, and working knowledge of Protools and Qlab. Experience with other sound related software is desirable, prior experience with Dante is highly desirable.
Outside the academic terms, the technical instructor will report directly to the Director of Information Technology. The position will coordinate with the Media Services department within IT to strategize for, design, build, and deliver classroom AV support services. This may include, but is not limited to, helping to support the AV needs of Field Work Term and summer programs, working with AV vendors to upgrade classroom systems, helping to coordinate systems optimization in preparation for upcoming semesters, helping with video conferencing/webinar support, and other duties as assigned.
A high regard for personal and work-place safety, willingness and ability to work across disciplines with a diverse body of students and faculty, strong communication and interpersonal skills, mechanical aptitude and an interest in contemporary music and sound design practices are required; previous work with students and a Bachelor’s degree or higher are preferred.
