Assistant Project Scientist - Division of Hematology and Oncology
The Division of Hematology and Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis, is seeking a full-time Assistant/Associate/Full Project Scientist. The purpose of this position is to provide support, coordination and leadership for research studies of Dr. Joseph M. Tuscano. In direct collaboration with the Principle Investigator(s), this position will be involved in coordination, management, and maintenance of cancer therapeutics and probe development with emphasis on immunotherapeutic approaches and the development of multi-targeted therapies for lymphoma, lung cancer, and other malignancies at UC Davis Health in Sacramento.
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
The research duties include performing tissue-related technologies, processing blood and other tissue samples, storing and tracking tissue samples, providing tissues to researchers, maintaining a database, as well as miscellaneous supporting work for the laboratory operations under the supervision of Dr. Tuscano. Specifically, the duties include: 1) to coordinate the collection and storage of tissue specimens, to dispose of unneeded specimens, and to maintain an updated specimen database, 2) to communicate with various investigators and to perform tissue-related cancer therapeutics research under PI's discretion, 3) to present research at periodic laboratory meetings and to discuss the progress of the research projects with the PI, 4) to assist research summary for grant and scientific writing for presentation and publication, and 5) to provide miscellaneous support to the laboratory and operational activities.
• Assist with data acquisition, data analyses, data reduction, bioinformatic analyses, statistical analyses, and other functions necessary for publication by the candidate and other group members.
• Assist with literature review for each publication, including initial drafting or participation in editing manuscript drafts from others in the group.
• Assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations.
• Prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies.
• Interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other research team members.
• Assist the PI in preparing proposals for funding from Investigational New Drug (IND), federal agencies, and other funding organizations.
• Assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (10%):
• Participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field of cancer therapeutics and serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate.
• Coordinate and give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings, or educational functions as appropriate.
• Attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
• Encouraged but not required to participate in service activities such as presenting research results to the general public or providing service to the university.
