Associate Director, Student Success and Retention

Job Description Summary

Florida’s only public university exclusively teaching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as the Associate Director, Student Success & Retention, in the department of Academic Support Services.

Play a pivotal role in the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive student success program, inclusive of general education advising and retention services, and mentoring programs. This role directly supports Academic Success initiatives that support students throughout their academic experience, from initial enrollment through graduation.

Job Description


  • Under the Direction of the Vice Provost of Academic Support Services, coordinate campus retention initiatives and the Success Coach team;
  • Develop and implement coaching expectations and metrics for academic advising and student retention services;
  • In collaboration with the Registrar’s Office, advise students individually and/or in groups regarding general education requirements, appropriate class selection, campus resources, academic policies and procedures;
  • Plan and conduct academic skills programing such as reading, writing, test-taking, note-taking, time management, critical thinking, resume creation and job search skills;
  • Work one-on-one with students to develop study skills strategies regarding academic progress;
  • Work in collaboration with campus partners to plan and coordinate intervention programs for at-risk students;
  • Serve as a resource for campus support services available to students, making necessary referrals to other campus support services as needed;
  • Assist with career development activities including student career development activities;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Proven personal initiative, problem-solving skills and customer service etiquette.
  • Disposition and proven work ethic to handle busy work cycles that include evenings and weekends.


  • Education: Master's degree in the area of Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education or a related field. STEM-related Master’s degree will also be considered.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years at an academic institution with experience in student advising, mentoring, supplemental instruction, freshman transition issues, and/or working with students in academic challenges.
  • Effective and professional written and verbal communication skills.


  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.

TARGET HIRING SALARY: Commensurate with experience.
