Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Job No: 496670
Position Type: full-time
Location: Lewisburg, PA
Categories: Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies

The Department of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Bucknell University invites applications for a one-year sabbatical replacement position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August 2021.

We seek a broadly trained teacher-scholar with a Ph.D. in Classics, Ancient History, Near Eastern Languages & Culture, or related fields. (Candidates in final stages of completing degree requirements for a PhD will also be considered.) Candidates should have demonstrable evidence of teaching success and must possess expertise in Ancient Greek and Latin as well as the history and cultures of Greece, Rome, and/or other Ancient Mediterranean communities. Candidates will demonstrate professional-level proficiency in research regarding the ancient world, emerging evidence of a strong body of scholarship, potential for growth in their field of specialization, and excellence in undergraduate teaching to a diverse student body. Candidates should expect to teach a range of courses that focus on the language, history, art and archaeology, religion and mythology, and other aspects of ancient culture in the Ancient Mediterranean. The normal teaching load for a replacement VAP is six courses per academic year. The position will require the teaching of Latin and/or Greek from the elementary to the advanced undergraduate level. In addition, candidates should be able to teach courses of broad appeal within (and potentially beyond) regular departmental course offerings.

We seek a teacher-scholar who has a demonstrated commitment to diversity and high impact educational practices (writing intensive courses, interdisciplinary courses, global learning, etc.) that would appeal to a broad university audience. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education. We invite candidates to explain how issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion are brought into their teaching, scholarship, and/or service in their application materials.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement of scholarly program, and a statement describing any experience, training, or engagement with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants should arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted separately.

For additional information and to apply, please go to Bucknell's career site (careers.bucknell.edu). Applications will only be accepted online. Review of applications will begin on March 31, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. Candidates who advance past the initial review of dossiers will be interviewed by video conferencing.

For any questions, please contact Kevin Daly (kdaly@bucknell.edu), Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies.
