Information & Responsibilities


The Director for Annual Giving is responsible for planning and leading annual giving fundraising efforts and managing an annual fund budget. The director provides strategies by developing and implementing a long-range plan that will emphasize giving initiatives whose purpose is to build a long-term base of support for the Institute, as well as a pipeline of leadership, major, and principal donors for the future. This important work will focus on engaging alumnx, families, friends, faculty, staff, and students to foster a culture of philanthropy throughout the community. This role is best suited for a results-oriented individual with superb organizational and analytical skills, deft interpersonal skills and collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity, strong communication abilities, and intellectual curiosity. Must be able to evaluate problems accurately and display good, sound judgment, and demonstrate a personal commitment to excellence.


Essential Job Functions

    Lead multi-channel marketing and outreach to acquire, re-activate, retain, and upgrade annual donors with a focus on growing our base of support, boosting retention rates, and growing the pipeline of major donors Analyze results of data trends to drive strategic planning of annual giving fundraising efforts Work closely with his/her/their peer directors as well as the CAO and coordinate effective donor and stewardship strategies across all areas Develop strong collaborations across various schools and programs at the Institute to deploy resources in innovative results-oriented ways that grow annual support and engage alumnx, parents, students, and friends



    Build relationships that encourage and promote a culture of philanthropy with stakeholders including alumnx, families, faculty, staff, and friends Demonstrate leadership in managing day to day operations of the annual giving program, create and manage the budget for annual giving initiatives, manage two staff persons in annual and leadership giving Collaborate with Marketing and Communications as well as the Advancement Services to develop creative and innovative models using predictive analytics to maximize our annual fundraising goals and donor engagement Collaborate with major gift officers, schools, and other campus departments in the execution of fundraising events and campaigns



    Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 100 alumni and parent prospects and donors. Conduct a high volume of outreach through personalized electronic, phone, and visits to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors for leadership-level annual gifts to the CalArts Fund ranging from $2,500-$25,000 through annual gifts and multi-year pledges Conceptualize and lead your team to implement a comprehensive annual giving plan that leverages print and digital solicitations, along with targeted follow up components (email, phone, in-person), and stewardship strategies that will lead to new donor acquisition and existing donor retention Further develop a strategy for the existing donor recognition group, Friends of CalArts (FoCA), and determine how to effectively utilize and leverage this group to grow the CalArts Fund Design and write compelling and articulate fundraising letters and supporting documents Work with the Advancement Stewardship and Communications Team to manage production and distribution of printed and digital assets Analyze donor data in order to create highly effective segmentation processes Draft and implement appropriate acknowledgment templates to best align with gifts at specific levels Coordinate reactivation strategies for lapsed donors Oversee the retention and growth of portfolios that lead to leadership giving overtime Develop and implement new strategies for donor acquisition from CalArts alumnx and family constituentcies Build a robust reporting and trend analysis system to understand and inform strategy Help manage and grow peer-to-peer crowd-funding channels Ensures that donors receive excellent customer service and stewardship Monitor industry best practices, trends, and new technologies to propose innovative fundraising strategies and tactics Related duties as assigned


Qualifications and Skills

    Seasoned fundraiser with demonstrated experience in executing all aspects of a successful annual fundraising program Savvy relationship builder who can work with a wide range of people, including senior business professionals and philanthropic donors, academic leaders, and volunteers Strong analytical background to help understand trends and performance, and using these to direct future strategies Working experience with donor management systems (in particular Salesforce), prospecting and marketing tools Broad knowledge of brand marketing and different types of outreach to various levels of donors, with specific experience in structuring long-term relationships with donors having different priorities; demonstrated success with establishing stewardship and donor recognition programs Emotional intelligence to interpret and act on emotions in themselves and others Commitment to serving diverse constituents. Ability to effectively convey messages to different audiences in a variety of different formats Ability to collaborate with a large team and attend to competing needs Works effectively with coworkers to promote and maintain a positive work environment while supporting strategic partnerships and collaborative relationships across the CalArts campus Grit to maintain composure when things go wrong and a sense of humor to stay sane and keep a positive attitude no matter what happens Strong organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, perseverance, optimism, and the ability to think strategically and creatively toward the advancement of CalArts High level of self-motivation to proactively move multiple tasks forward while documenting and sharing progress, and meeting strict deadlines Tech savviness to be able to use best practices to improve and reinforce processes Experience and confidence in donor database management and ease functioning in CRM systems Strong computer skills: MS Word, Excel, databases, mail merges, Adobe Acrobat, Prezi and/or PowerPoint, event registration systems (Eventbrite), and survey software (Qualtrics)


Education and/or Experience

    Bachelor level degree required Fundraising background (5-10 years), preferably in higher education Extensive knowledge and expertise in annual giving and direct marketing principles Demonstrated success in executing an innovative annual giving campaign Experience cultivating and successfully soliciting prospects capable of gifts from participation to the

$25,000 range

    Expert manager with a track record of successful coaching and role modeling Experience working collaboratively with colleagues, donors, and volunteers Proficient in stewardship, training, and outreach Experience and/or interest in arts disciplines


Further Information

Must be available to work additional hours during evenings or weekends, and at peak periods of the year. Accept that on rare occasions during certain times of the year, there will be restrictions to vacation approvals.
