International Education and Services (IES) at Southeast Missouri State University is housed in the International Village on the Southeast campus.  IES contributes to comprehensive internationalization efforts across the campus through oversight of the Intensive English Program (IEP), study abroad, international student recruitment & admissions, and support services for more than 500 international students.  The International Student Counselor will play a critical role by assisting international students during the admissions process through their eventual matriculation to campus.  We seek a dynamic, ethical, motivated professional with excellent customer-service skills, a passion for learning, and a desire to help international students achieve their academic goals. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform credential evaluations for international applicants and other international admission processes, as necessary
  • Communicate with newly admitted international students to complete their admission process, including the submission of required documents
  • Collaborate with Student Financial Services to award international student scholarship and communicate award details to students
  • Serve as liaison between newly admitted international students and their academic advisor to facilitate timely and successful enrollment
  • Assist with all aspects of new international student orientation, including pre-arrival communication, managing airport pickups, leading select orientation sessions, including both online and in-person events, and fee assessment
  • Organize and lead activities to promote international student engagement in the first year and beyond
  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
  • Provide backup support in the International Admissions and/or International Student Services areas as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident qualified to serve as DSO and ARO for SEVIS purposes  
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively and appropriately with people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds 
  • Strong customer service skills 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both verbal and written, with experience interacting with non-native English speakers
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common issues that pertain to international student life
  • Understanding of the college admission process (international or domestic)  
  • Strong technical proficiency with a demonstrated ability to work across multiple software platforms simultaneously 
  • Experience with electronic reports and making data-informed decisions 
  • Availability to work occasional nights and weekends 
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license (or have the ability to obtain one), and be comfortable driving 15-passenger van 
  • Experience with public speaking  
  • Experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks 
  • Ability to diffuse an emotional or tense situation and offer viable solutions 
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
