Agricultural Mechanic

Position Summary:
Provides support for the Kimberly Research and Extension Center research activities and farm operations by performing and overseeing maintenance and repairs of field and research equipment; by repairing, modifying, custom designing, and manufacturing specialized research equipment using standard and specialized tools. Performs maintenance and winterization of buildings, grounds, and facilities. Assists with field days or other events for the public and stakeholders. Contributes to team effort by operating tractors and equipment, monitoring for safe working conditions, and maintaining accurate records. Creates a work environment that emphasizes teamwork and safety.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Experience repairing and maintaining hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, small engines and various other mechanical and electronic systems found on farm equipment, vehicles, and research equipment.
• Experience repairing and maintaining buildings and facilities, which may include carpentry, and working with heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems.
• Experience operating gas and arc welding equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Postsecondary education, preferably in a technical and/or mechanical field.
• Postsecondary training and certification as a mechanic and/or welder.
Ability to:
• Use computer word processing programs, email, and spreadsheet programs.
Experience:
• Modifying, repairing, and fabricating equipment used for field, greenhouse, and laboratory research.
• Following safety precautions and procedures relating to mechanical equipment and repair shops, and to the use, care, and disposal of hazardous automotive material and waste.
• Reading and interpreting technical service manuals.
• Operating tractors and other agricultural equipment.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
• Must be able to stoop, bend, reach and lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
• Requires continual movement around and between the greenhouses, buildings, and field sites for extended periods of time to complete duties of the position.
