The Persian-Farsi Academic Language and Culture Specialist serves as a foreign language instructor and academic specialist on a foreign language teaching team. Serves as a model teacher, a trainer for other team members in the latest techniques and developments in the field of foreign language training, and as an architect of instructional material development and modification. They will develop curriculum and instruct U.S. military and government personnel in intensive language and culture courses delivered in person and over video-teleconferencing (VTC).

Specific duties for this position include:

  • Teaching (70%). Establishes learning objectives and course content; advises language department chairperson; instructs students involving a broad and diverse range of content domains and integrated language skills; conducts informal pilot studies to improve instruction; applies best practices in teaching approaches and techniques; tailors instruction.
  • Curriculum Development (15%). Develops and maintains course syllabi and curricula; develops new materials; schedules instruction; distributes course materials to students in a timely manner; incorporates culture and regional studies coursework into curricula; maintains expertise in foreign language acquisition principles; stays abreast of current research and theories of the discipline of foreign language education and of new language materials available from outside sources.
  • Student and Program Evaluation (15%). Evaluates the effectiveness of the curricula to ensure that customer, DCLCP and student expectations are met; develops evaluation standards; assesses student language capabilities; reviews weekly lesson plans and curriculum; reviews student’s weekly grades and performance; emplaces pedagogic interventions for students who are not meeting expectations; completes student progress reports and bi-weekly counseling.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, to include:
    • Ensures effective communication and collaboration within the department.
    • Completes assigned tasks from the supported customer and from the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) in a timely manner.
    • Conducts weekly meetings with language faculty and attends DCLCP weekly and other meetings as needed.
    • Collaborates with the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) on requirements for course accreditation submission.

Due to instruction being conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.

The position may be located at Fort Bragg NC, or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the Director of the DCLCP.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree (language and/or literature), linguistics (applied linguistics is preferred), History, Anthropology, or any related field
  • Must have experience in curriculum development for Persian-Farsi language materials.
  • Be fluent in Persian-Farsi language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. Preferably, this instructor will also have the ability to teach Persian-Farsi language.
  • Be able to teach and develop curriculum in the culture, national security issues, geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc. of the target regions.
  • Have a high level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs), Smartboards, and iPads.
  • Be able to work productively in a group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration) and effectively in an independent mode.
  • While employed instructors must develop curriculum based on the needs of the program and as required by the DoD.
  • Must have experience in instructing Persian-Farsi, and preferably the ability to teach Persian-Farsi language and culture.
  • Must have experience in curriculum development for Persian-Farsi language materials.
  • Must possess adroit observational skills and be capable of offering fresh, creative solutions in difficult situations.
  • Applicant must score advanced in English as tested against the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), is required to take the OPI before selection and must score superior in Persian-Farsi.
  • Individual must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation.
  • Must have knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
  • Must be able to work productively within a team and independently.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in relevant field
  • Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.
  • Experience managing organizations and supervising other instructors.
About the Defense Critical Language/Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center

The Defense Critical Language/Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center develops and presents comprehensive language and regional studies/cultural awareness courses, courseware, and supporting materials designed to prepare DOD and USG employees for overseas deployment. These courses and materials will be specifically designed to meet DoD requirements, and may include, but not be limited to, languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Dari, Persian, Indonesian, French, Russian, Pashto, and Korean. Additionally, these courses and materials will include a substantial regional and cultural studies component. DCLCP will also develop synchronous online learning modules and Apple Apps for language and culture instruction in coordination with Department of Defense (DoD) entities.
