The purpose of the Materials Science Institute (MSI) is to study the structure and properties of materials, to educate in the sciences of materials, and to serve Oregon as a resource in these sciences. Since 1985 MSI has more than tripled the size of its research program, developed four new graduate programs in materials, and contributed to the State's prosperity through collaboration with more than 25 Oregon companies.
The Business Manager of the Materials Science Institute (MSI) is part of the lnstitute's management team, and reports to the director of the Institute. The management team includes the directors of operations connected to the MSI, the Graduate Internship Program, the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists (COACh), Lens of the Market Initiative, and the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry.
The Business Manager is responsible for managing the core operations of the MSI. These core operations include developing, promoting, and managing the institute's sponsored programs portfolio and other research activities, fiscal management of the Institute, and general operations of the MSI office.
The Business Manager directly supervises a Grants Coordinator, an Administrative Program Assistant, and a part-time Grants Technician.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or
related field AND two years of related budget and accounting
OR, six years of progressively responsible budgeting and accounting experience;
OR, an equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
- Two years of managerial experience.
- Ability to perform duties in a way that advances and supports
the mission of the department and university.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and
create effective relationships for problem-solving.
- Ability to take initiative; attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain a safe and safety-conscious
- Ability to maintain a respectful workplace and model a positive

- Professional experience in an academic or non-profit
- Professional grant administration experience in a unit or
- Experience and facility with BANNER and/or other enterprise
financial and administrative information systems.
- Experience and facility with on-line grant submission
- Knowledge of and experience with federal funding
- Knowledge of federal regulations including 0MB Circulars, the
FAR, and other agency policies and regulations to maintain
compliance with terms and conditions of the award.
