The job of Laboratory Technician Class Series (Chemistry) is done for the purpose/s of performing a variety of learning resources activities, technical and clerical work related to the operation of a student chemistry lab.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory and related areas; performs specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Prepares and maintains chemical solutions, reagents and other instructional materials and equipment for laboratory experiments, demonstrations and exercises.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment typically found in physical/natural science laboratories. Orders, receives and stores supplies, materials and equipment; maintains inventories, conducts catalog research and contacts vendors to purchase supplies and materials.
  • Prepares and maintains chemistry lab prep room, outdoor areas assigned to Chemistry and/or supplies for the purpose of providing a clean, organized layout and safe work environment.
  • Maintains laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assures the safe and proper handling of chemicals and biological specimens.
  • Provides for proper disposal of waste materials in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Adjusts, maintains and performs minor repair to equipment; reports major repair needs according to established procedures.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. purchase orders, operating procedures for equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Supports instructors (e.g. setting up lab experiments, preparing observations, audio visual equipment, preparing chemicals, reagents, labware, and instrumentation etc.) for the purpose of complementing classroom instruction.
  • Trains and provides work direction to student and hourly workers as assigned; assists in coordinating laboratory duties and assignments.
  • Assists instructors in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and supplies in the instructional setting.


Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTS
1. Community College and/or Vocational School Degree with study in job related area; and
2. Job Related Experience within Specialized Field is required; and
3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

1. AA/AS or BS in Chemistry or in a Chemistry-related field: chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent.

2. Ability to make and maintain solutions, reagents, set up instructional laboratory for students, and operate/maintain standard chemistry laboratory instruments/equipment (IR, pH meters, AA/AE, spectrophotometers, NMR, etc.)

3. Experience working in a chemistry instructional laboratory setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)

KNOWLEDGE is required to: perform basic math including calculation of fractions, percents and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents and solve practical problems. Basic principles with aseptic procedures and techniques used in science laboratories. Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to science laboratories. A wide variety of equipment and materials used in science laboratories. Fundamentals of laboratory organization and management. Oral and written communication skills. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: handling hazardous materials and filing and using MSDS information for various chemicals, preparing chemical solutions, neat configurations for demonstrations, and prepare displays for classrooms; maintains classroom and labs in a clean and orderly manner.

SKILLS are required to: perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in chemistry lab; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Use of new or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.

ABILITY is required to: schedule a number of activities; gather collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a significant number of factors in the use of equipment and supplies. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; and utilize a wide variety of job related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. Supplemental & Salary Information
RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the Organization's services.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 55% sitting, 35% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in varying atmospheric conditions.

SALARY INFORMATION

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary Range: CSEA 115

Starting Salary Range: $28.74 - $31.68 per hour (Step 1 - 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION

Employees in this classification are represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up-to 7% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
