St. Lawrence University’s Department of Performance and Communication Arts invites applications for a full-time, 10-month, potentially renewable position as Costume Shop Manager and Instructor of Theatre.

This position is responsible for the oversight of the costume shop (maintaining stock, managing budget, and training/overseeing student workers and crews) and realizing costume designs (patterning, building, fitting, etc.) for the department’s mainstage season, as well as contributing other specialties to complement departmental offerings.

The University Theatre season includes two faculty-directed productions, two faculty-directed dance concerts, as well as acting/directing showcases.

Teaching responsibilities could include costume technology, draping, patterning, new or experimental costume technologies, sustainability, millinery, or stage make-up. Courses assigned based on experience, qualifications, and departmental needs. Teaching load is 2/1.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed MFA in Costume Technology, Costume Production/Design or equivalent experience in professional costume shop.
  • Demonstrated excellence in costume construction, flat patterning, draping, assembling, fitting, and alterations.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching in the formal or informal classroom.
  • Proficiency and experience in maintaining and troubleshooting costume equipment.
