Muskingum University invites applications for visionary academic leader to serve as the next Chair of the Education Department and Director of the Educator Preparation Program, moving forward the program’s mission of developing teacher-leaders who encourage, equip and empower all students.  The successful candidate will work closely with the education faculty and with the Division of Graduate and Continuing Studies in leading the department’s initiatives to re-envision programs preparing educators to meet the needs of contemporary learners.   The Department Chair oversees all operations within the department, including strategic planning, curriculum development, grant writing, and partnerships with P-12 school districts. In addition, assuring compliance with all standards set forth by the Ohio Department of Education and by the Council for Accreditation of Education Programs (CAEP) is a key responsibility. 


This full-time administrative appointment carries faculty status and will involve some teaching in the candidate’s areas of expertise.  Start date of January 2022 required; Fall 2021 start date is preferred.


Muskingum University, a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts tradition, is located just seventy miles east of Columbus, Ohio, in the village of New Concord. Founded in 1837, the university has undergraduate, graduate, and adult-learner student populations totaling approximately 3,000.   The Department of Education offers majors in early childhood, middle childhood and special education, eight adolescent/young adult and three multi-age teaching licenses at the bachelor’s level, three graduate degrees in education and multiple post-graduate licensure and endorsement programs.

  • Doctoral degree in education required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible higher education administrative roles
  • Attainment of Associate or Professor status as a faculty member within a teacher education program.
  • Passion for promoting educators of excellence
  • Direct experience as an educator within PreK-12 educational settings
  • Thorough knowledge of CAEP standards and accreditation processes
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and motivate faculty colleagues in achieving departmental goals
  • Skilled in the use of data-based decision-making models and experienced in assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Evidence of strong and respectful collaborative working relationship with other administrators, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Creative and entrepreneurial approach to program development
  • Flexibility, persistence, and humor in approaching challenges
