Champlain College invites applications for the position of Director of Housing and Residential Life. The Director serves as a senior staff member within the Division of Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion and oversees all aspects of housing, residential life and residential education. The Director also serves as one of the College's Title IX Deputies. Candidates must be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and able to balance administrative duties with a strong student development focus. The Director is responsible for creating safe, inclusive, and dynamic communities that empower students' holistic development for more than 1400 residents. This position is supervised directly by the Dean of Students and plays a key role in the strategic planning of the department with a focus on operations, safety, security, fiscal responsibility, and compliance.
The Director must create efficient operational practices that focus on student learning, growth, and development. The position contributes to the strategic and capital planning within the department and the execution of housing operations including marketing/promotion of College housing, room assignments, billing, and front desk management. This position leads the department's occupancy management efforts, oversees the residential database software (Adirondack Housing Director), and manages room selection process for students. The Director provides training and support to staff and team members.
- Provide direct supervision for the Assistant Director of Housing Operations; Area Coordinators (4), indirect oversight of 60 Resident Advisors.
- Provide leadership for all housing, facilities and operations initiatives for student housing, including key management.
- Provide vision and leadership for housing occupancy management, including but not limited to planning, reporting, management, communication and marketing. Lead marketing efforts to assure desired occupancy levels. Indirectly manage and oversee housing assignments, billing, room changes/selection processes.
- Manage requests for exemptions and releases from contract in a timely manner by coordinating with the Financial Aid, Student Accounts, the Office of Accessibility and making recommendations to the Dean of Students for final approval.
- Provide overall leadership for professional and paraprofessional departmental staff, as well as creating a supportive environment that promotes the professional/personal development of staff members.
- Oversee coordination of all hall opening/closing processes in conjunction with departmental leadership, hall staff and campus constituents and residence hall custodial and maintenance reporting.
- Facilitate the departmental budgetary process to ensure adequate resources for operations, technology and facilities needs that align with departmental mission and goals.
- Lead marketing efforts to assure desired occupancy levels. Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing, promotions and brand plan. Coordinate and oversee the development of content for the department's website and social media accounts.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with key College stakeholders, including but not limited to Campus Public Safety, Student Accounts, Admission, Facilities Administration and Physical Plant, Information Technology, Finance, and other Student Affairs departments, ensuring the safety and security of residence halls. Manage relationships with external service providers.
- Assist with the creation, implementation, and evaluation of the department's strategic plan, mission, and goals. Serve as a member of the Dean of Students' management team; serve on and lead other departmental, divisional, and college committees.
- Serve in an on-call capacity to support staff emergency response during evenings, weekends, and holidays. Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students.
- Create and maintain vibrant communities that contribute to the development of the whole person-mind, body, and spirit.
- Indirectly supervise and mentor residence life student staff.
- Recruit, select and train new and returning staff members.
- Meet regularly with staff individually and conduct weekly staff meetings.
- Direct, monitor, assess and evaluate staff work assignments and work flow.
- Disseminate information, provide training experiences, direct professional growth and develop a sense of team cohesiveness.
- Provide challenge and support to staff members in job responsibilities, leadership skills, and personal growth.
- Cultivate an understanding of diversity and inclusion and create inclusive living environments.
- Foster healthy personal lifestyle choices.
- Act as a college agent and coordinate college response to student conflicts, residence hall procedures, and damages.
- Work closely with the Office of Community Standards; serve as conduct officer within the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
- Serve as a member of the Colleges Student Care and Response Team (SCART).
- Maintain a visible presence in the residence halls through participation in residence functions, attendance at resident meetings, involvement in student events, and frequent walk-throughs.
- Serve in the on-call and crisis response rotation for all residential students exercising discretion and judgment in resolving critical incidents. Position deemed as essential personnel as an emergency responder to natural and human caused disasters.
- Facilitate learning for all student leaders within the division.
- Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education/Student Affairs, or other related field is required.
- A minimum of 4-6 years of full-time post-master's degree work experience in a directly related/relevant field in a college or university environment is required, including supervision of professional staff.
- Web development skills and proficiency in Google Workspace is required.
- Demonstrated passion and commitment to college student development.
- Ability to relate well and be a mentor to a diverse population of college students.
- Experience in facilitating and supervising the planning and coordinating of creative events and approaches to community development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency with housing and other university database systems is required. Previous experience with Adirondack Housing Director and Maxient software experience is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated crisis management skills are strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including the ability to work effectively with staff, students and other key stakeholders, inside and outside of Student Affairs is strongly preferred.
