Position Information Working Title:  Director of Development
UW System Title:  Development Program Manager I or II Essential Job Functions

The Director of Development identifies, qualifies, cultivates, and solicits individuals and organizations for philanthropic support of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Director of Development builds relationships, solicits and secures gifts and pledges, and provides regular stewardship of donors and their gifts. The Director of Development raises funds in support of the University’s Phoenix Athletic program.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit donors and prospective donors for philanthropic gifts in support of Phoenix Athletics.
  • In consultation with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, develop and actively manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 assigned donors and prospects for principal gifts ($1 million and greater), major gifts ($25,000 and greater), leadership annual gifts ($1,000 and greater), and planned gifts (bequest commitments, charitable remainder trusts, etc.). Prepare a fundraising moves management strategy for each assigned donor and prospect. Meet in person with these alumni, friends, businesses and foundations, and communicate with them regularly throughout the year.
  • Meet or exceed annual performance goals and expectations, including: Number of personal visits; number of gifts solicited and received; dollar amounts solicited and received; number of new major-gift prospects visited and qualified. Each year, have 175 to 225 personal visit appointments with donor and prospects.
  • Meet with donors and prospects at least 33% (one-third) of the time, the equivalent of at least 80 full work days per year. Most of these individuals and organizations are located in Green Bay, Milwaukee, Madison, other cities and regions of Wisconsin, and the Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul areas.
  • Maintain a calendar of trips and appointments in order to wisely utilize time and budget resources. To schedule appointments with donors and prospects, make telephone calls and send personal letter/notes and personalized e-mail messages. Persevere and follow up as necessary to secure and confirm appointments. When traveling for a period of days or a full work week, strive to have four to six visits per day with donors and prospects.
  • Identify donors and prospects by analyzing information available in Raiser’s Edge records system, information gathered from Internet searches and other research, and by seeking suggestions and referrals from alumni, friends, and University colleagues. This information includes records of past giving, involvement at UW-Green Bay while a student and as an alumnus, occupation job title and employer, wealth indicators, gift capacity ratings, relationships, etc.
  • Meet with donors and prospects to build relationships and discuss and assess their: (1) personal interests that may correlate with fundraising priorities of UW-Green Bay and Phoenix Athletics; (2) financial capacity to make gifts; (3) propensity and desire to be philanthropic in support of Phoenix Athletics. Present the case for support and gift/naming opportunities. When appropriate or requested, write gift proposals and present them to donors and prospects. Solicit gifts and explain the various ways donors can make gifts. Follow up in a timely manner to secure gift commitments.
  • Collaborate regularly with the athletic director, administration, coaches and any deans or faculty members of academic units/programs assigned to the Director of Development. Strategically utilize the athletic director and coaches in personal visits with top donors and prospects to cultivate, solicit, and secure major gifts and pledges.
  • In consultation with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, determine when the Chancellor should be requested to meet with a donor or prospect who is indicating interest in making a principal or major gift and would likely make a gift commitment by being personally visited and asked by the Chancellor. Plan an effective strategy for engaging the Chancellor with the donor or prospect.
  • Be the liaison for donors and prospects with Phoenix Athletics (through the Director of Athletics) and programs they want to support. As prudent and per the wishes of the donor, collaborate with the Athletic Director to strategically engage and move the donor towards making a gift commitment.
  • When donors and prospects have multiple interests in supporting UW-Green Bay units and programs, collaborate with other University development officers on cultivation and joint gift proposals/solicitations.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate records of donors and prospects in the Raiser’s Edge computer records system. On a daily basis, enter contract reports of all meetings with donors and prospects, substantive telephone conversations, personal letters, personal gift solicitations/proposals, etc. Update information about donor and prospect assignments, qualification/disqualification of donors and prospects, and current and planned proposals.
  • Actively participate in the University Prospect Coordination System.
  • Serve as a member of the University Advancement team.
  • Attend University Advancement staff meetings in person or while traveling via Skype, telephone conference call, etc.
  • Attend University donor & Athletic events.
  • Assist in the public recognition and stewardship of donors. Promptly write thank-you notes and letters to assigned donors who make new gifts and pledges.
  • Provide information for inclusion in the University Advancement Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to learn about new trends, new techniques, and new ideas for being a highly productive and effective development officer.
  • Keep the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement regularly updated about visits with donors and prospects, trips, gift solicitations, and progress toward achievement of performance goals.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university at time of application 
  • 3 years of experience in fundraising, recruitment, sales, and/or marketing 
  • Possession of or eligible to obtain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license upon appointment

  • Demonstrated experience in cultivation, solicitation, and/or relationship building

Conditions Of Appointment

Some overnight travel is required. Some work and travel during evenings and weekends is required to visit donors and/or attend meetings and events. 

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary

Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
