POSITION PURPOSE

The Marketing and Communications Writing Fellow supports Whitman College's strategic marketing and communications efforts by creating strong written content for the online newsroom, college webpages, enrollment marketing print and digital materials, the Whitman Magazine, and other content for print and digital for varied external and internal constituents, including prospective students, alumni, donors and the campus community.

This position will be 40 hours per week from August 1, 2021 with the opportunity to work through July 2023 and can start earlier to allow for overlap with the current Fellow for training purposes.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Work collaboratively with the content team, communications and admission staff.
  2. Create marketing content in support of the college's enrollment strategy, including emails, newsletters, websites, brochures, flyers and other print and digital material.
  3. In partnership with the Senior Writer and Editor, serve as a writer for news and feature content for the Whitman Newsroom.
  4. Write and edit website content, including copy for pages that represent Whitman's programs, services and people, ensuring quality, consistency and accuracy and using best practices in search engine optimization.
  5. Serve as a writer for Whitman Magazine, contributing news and features as assigned.
  6. Complete other writing and communications assignments for diverse audiences including prospective students, alumni, donors and the campus community.
  7. Mentor student writers.
  8. Copyedit and proofread material as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Exemplary writing and reporting skills, adaptable for a range of purposes and audiences, including but not limited to media, internal communication, magazine, digital, marketing and fundraising.
  2. A high level of creativity with the ability to create engaging marketing and campaign copy for targeted audiences.
  3. Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively and creatively, both verbally and in writing.
  5. Ability to learn and apply AP style and Whitman style guidelines.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the college's leaders as well as students, faculty, staff, donors, alumni and the general public, in part to conduct effective interviews for content.
  7. Ability to positively and actively contribute to the College's core values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with diverse individuals and groups.
  9. Ability to establish and meet deadlines, manage multiple projects, and to work effectively with a team and independently.
  10. Excellent organizational skills to assist the content team in managing projects.


QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, English, journalism, rhetoric, or related field or any combination of experience that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
