Program Director for Social Justice Curricular Initiatives, UCLA Center for Community Engagement, Undergraduate Education Initiatives (Academic Administrator)

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Community Engagement, the Program Director works strategically to develop and implement the Mellon Foundation funded “UCLA Mellon Social Justice Curriculum.” The UCLA Mellon Social Justice Curriculum encompasses multiple curricular elements, including a three-quarter long, team-taught course for first-year students, digital humanities program and course development, a new masters program in Data & Society, and summer institutes—all built on a commitment to community-engaged teaching, learning, and research.

Job responsibilities include but not limited to providing intellectual leadership for development of new courses, curricula, and programs, as well as building partnerships with faculty in existing and emerging UCLA academic units whose curricula connect with data-focused social justice teaching and research. The incumbent will also develop relationships with nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies with which the UCLA Mellon Social Justice Curriculum works as community partners. The Program Director teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels that contribute to the Social Justice Curriculum and work with the Faculty Advisory Committee on all aspects of program development and implementation. The Program Director also prepares grant reports required under the terms of the Mellon Foundation grant.

The UCLA Social Justice Curriculum will bring scientific fields like engineering, computer science, and medicine together with a humanist-led social justice curriculum. The curriculum explores transdisciplinary theories, concepts, and research methods, while affording students unique learning opportunities supported by our community partnerships. A defining feature of the UCLA Social Justice Curriculum is the recognition of data and technology as a critical nexus for research and training in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

The Program Director will develop and implement the following curricular components, in coordination with the UCLA Mellon Social Justice Curriculum Faculty Advisory Committee.

1. A First Year Cluster on “Data, Society, and Social Justice”
2. Enhanced curricular offerings in the Experimental Humanities (digital, urban, environmental, and health humanities) focusing on:
  • Racial and spatial justice: Democracy, urbanization, and just cities
  • Data justice: Computation, big data, and networked societies
  • Environmental and economic justice: Climate change and ecological sustainability
  • Health justice: Human health, wellbeing, and illness
    3. The Master's in Data & Society (MiDAS) program—a new, professional master's degree program that will be available as a 3+1 BA/MA opportunity for UCLA undergraduates.
    4. Summer Institutes and Workshops in Social Justice that address racial, economic, environmental, urban, and health inequities.

    The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree (ideally in a humanities or social sciences field), with significant experience working with humanistic and social science data and its applications. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge and experience in community-engagement and social justice teaching in higher education. The candidate must demonstrate evidence of strategic thinking and leadership, strong oral and written communication skills, an ability to forge collaborative relationships, a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, a record of effective leadership, and experience in curriculum development. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and broad familiarity with the development of degree programs at the university level, and experience working with departments to promote community-engaged teaching and outreach.

    Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position salary range is $88,581/year to $94,437/year.

    Position remains open until filled. This is a full-time (100% time) position.
