Job Description Summary
The Librarian for Education supports the research and teaching mission of the University of Pennsylvania with responsibility for serving as the Libraries' liaison to the Graduate School of Education and building collections on education.

The librarian develops strong working relationships with Graduate School of Education faculty, students, and affiliated researchers to support their scholarly and intellectual needs through collections and services. The librarian will be responsible for providing group and individual instruction and consultation for basic and advanced research and for academic courses. The librarian will provide library support to the School for aspects of scholarly communication, including copyright and publishing guidance and related scholarly services. The librarian will engage with the School's divisions and programs by attending lectures, holding office hours, and will monitor and disseminate current awareness of developments in the discipline and its scholarly practices. The librarian will collaborate with colleagues to enhance existing programs and services and to develop new programs and services as opportunities arise.

Collection development responsibilities include selection of materials in all formats, budget and fund management, endowments stewardship, approval plan oversight, and gift review, collaboration with collections librarians in making major purchases, and reviewing trends in publishing modes and practices. The librarian may participate in departmental planning, Penn Libraries committees, task forces or programs, and collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries, campus, and with partner institutions.

Job Description

Principal Position Responsibilities / Duties

1. Serve as academic engagement librarian to the Graduate School of Education. Provide basic to advanced research assistance and library instruction through multiple approaches; offer instructional and curricular support; provide consultations related to scholarly publishing and author services; prepare online guides and related informational materials; and match School needs with an evolving program of Library services.

2. Develop and maintain collections in assigned social sciences subject areas, build collections in all formats, manage annual budget(s), steward endowments, and collaborate with the Coordinator for Social Sciences Collections and other colleagues in making major purchases and reviewing trends in publishing modes and practices.

3. Participate with colleagues in library-wide projects and committees with the aim of enhancing existing or developing new programs and services.

4. Participate in library-wide services such as general research assistance including library chat and student engagement programming, orientations and tours, and library instruction outside of designated liaison areas.

5. Engage in formal and informal professional development activities to enhance awareness of scholarly trends, promote collegial relationships with faculty, and learn new skills to support primary clientele.

6. Perform additional duties as assigned.



1. Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school and advanced study in education or a related field and relevant library experience.

2. Breadth of knowledge of the scholarly research in education, trends in the field, and methodological approaches.

3. Familiarity with major bibliographic tools (print and electronic) for the study of education.

4. Experience working collaboratively and independently with varied groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing work environment.

5. Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

6. Excellent organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to design projects and bring them to conclusion in a timely fashion; demonstrated skill in providing high-quality, user-centered research support services, preferably in an academic library.


1. Experience with citation management or collaborative writing software and creation of web content (e.g., Libguides, Drupal).

2. Interest in learning emerging technologies and web applications.

3. Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative data applications.
