Coordinator-Student Media & Production

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students the Coordinator of Student Media is a professional staff member responsible for the oversight and management of the student media program, including providing the direction, counsel, management, and guidance to the editorial and news student leaders while respecting student editorial independence and First Amendment rights. The Coordinator plays a key role in planning efforts of student media organizations, training staff members on newsgathering and publishing, and assisting with daily operations. Duties and responsibilities also include but are not limited to building partnerships across the campus, developing and implementing student learning outcomes, overseeing the student planning, organization and evaluation of events/activities and meetings, and managing the branding of the program. This position requires tenacity, diplomacy, and a commitment to student involvement and autonomy demonstrated through regular mentorship of student leaders. Coordinate advertising and revenue activities.

50% Advise and provide editorial guidance to The UVU Review, The UVU Review On-Line and other printed and digital products. Maintain a regular presence in newsrooms to observe and assess newsgathering, production, and programming operations. Be a resource for student staff while protecting freedom of expression. Maintain and meet student learning outcomes. Meet regularly with editor-in-chief, section editors, station manager, programming directors, and other staff to provide feedback and suggestions. Attend Editorial Board and Director's meetings.

25% Critique print, broadcast, and digital products on a regular post-production basis and share comments and suggestions with staff. Develop, schedule, and oversee consistent staff training programs and workshops to promote skills in journalism, broadcast media, leadership, photography, and publishing.Educate staff and community about ethical, legal, and university policy issues (open meeting, libel, privacy, copyright, plagiarism, etc.) and provide necessary resources when needed. Advise staff on operation and maintenance of publishing, broadcasting, and photographic equipment and make new purchase recommendations.

15% Responsible for budget and authorization of expenditures, including annual budget preparation and monthly reviews. Coordinate media advertising and revenue.

10% Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in a directly related field of study or a combination of education and experience totaling four years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Acute comprehension of First Amendment communication law, copyright, privacy, and FCC regulations.
  • Knowledge of College Media Advisors Code of Ethics and Society of Professional Journalism.
  • Understanding of HTML, PHP, social media, and digital publishing software. Knowledge of public relations/marketing. * Knowledge of sound broadcasting/recording.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to student involvement. Knowledge of methods and practices of effective leadership principles and techniques, including mentoring, supervision, and management.
  • Knowledge of planning, developing, and coordinating student programs. Demonstrated skillset centered on group dynamics, mentorship, and leadership development.
  • Project and program management skills including conception, development, implementation, management, and evaluation.
  • Experience in news/media. Proven proficiency in desktop publishing software, graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite), and communication technologies.
  • Skill in publication layout design and design.
  • Previous experience developing inexperienced reporters (professional or student).
  • Managerial skills and the ability to build strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public are essential.
  • Ability to establish strategic media partnerships to further student skill sets.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with a variety of constituents including students, faculty, administrators, and community members.
  • Well organized, with the ability to effectively multi-task, prioritize work, and meet scheduled deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, English, or a related field OR any combination of education and experience totaling 7 years.

Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a normal office environment.

Pay Range: $35,568 - $42,914
