Job Description

The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences (APSC) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech invites applications for two open rank (assistant, associate, full) Professor of Practice positions to begin in August 2021. The faculty member will engage in enrichment efforts with a strong interest in developing and educating the next generation of leader for animal agriculture to join the department as a Professor of Practice. A candidate’s experience and credentials will be the basis for determination of the rank of the appointment. The successful applicant will interface with dynamic faculty, advising staff, and undergraduate students, providing state-of-the-art expertise in advising, education, curriculum development, and mentoring. The successful candidate will be expected to bring specialized industry expertise to the instructional programs of the department, leading efforts in professional preparation of students, including but not limited to expanding internship and other experiential learning opportunities. The incumbent will teach classes in their area of interest and expertise, interface with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Academic Programs Office; and contribute to existing scholarly efforts in the department, college, and university.

These positions are non-tenure-track, 12-month appointment and are not intended for tenure transfer; however, advancement in rank is achievable. The faculty member will be encouraged to remain active in the livestock, dairy, equine, and/or companion animal industries in ways that contribute to the undergraduate program in Animal Sciences.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree or equivalent in the Animal Sciences or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated industry contacts/network
• Experience and demonstrated success in delivering Animal Science instruction

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated understanding of production animal agriculture, the equine industry, and/or the companion animal industry
• Record of accomplishment working with students in university or industry settings
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
