Student Career Services in Student Affairs Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Natural Sciences and Pre-Health Career Coach.

The Natural Sciences and Pre-Health Career Coach will provide advising for students pursuing graduate health & life sciences professional programs, pathways and manages related campus initiatives and activities. The position is responsible for collaborating with leadership and academic programs to provide accurate and quality customer service to potential and matriculated students, and for contributing to the retention and progression of the health & natural sciences degree-seeking and meta-major pathway students.

  • Advise students interested in health professions (including medicine, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, dental, and veterinary school) and natural sciences pathways.
  • Instruct students on prerequisites entering health & natural sciences professions and on application processes.
  • Proactively advise students to understand and consider multiple career pathways.
  • Provide career advising support to the health & natural sciences meta-major pathway students.
  • Provide counsel to prospective applicants – communicate via email, telephone, teleconference, and in-person visits.
  • Provide assistance on preparing for graduate-level entrance exams such as the MCAT, DAT, VMCAS, etc.
  • Guide students in defining graduate and professional school options, identifying successful search strategies, developing a resume, portfolio, personal statement, and interviewing skills.
  • Maintain pre-health website with resources for students including shadowing opportunities, information about related programs, degree maps, meta-major pathways, etc.
  • Advise relevant student clubs and organizations.

    Administration, Recruitment & Retention:
  • Collaborate with key curriculum committees (especially STEM, NHS) to identify important gaps in the UW Bothell curriculum needed to support the retention and progress of health & natural science students.
  • Collaborate with Academic Advisors to identify and address challenges for students’ academic/pre-professional progression.
  • Manage pre-health shared email inbox and communication.
  • Develop and host programming to connect health & natural science students with professional development, employment, and graduate school opportunities.
  • Manage campus initiatives and activities regarding health & natural sciences career information to all students.
  • Manage health & natural sciences newsletter, connecting and informing students of relevant programming.
  • Maintain a database to track pre-health students embedded in other programs.
  • Create reports on successful graduate school applicants.
  • Partner with campus advisors, faculty, and leadership to ensure that health & natural sciences students follow an appropriate course of study. Liaison to STEM departments and other advisors.
  • Serve as professional liaison to and collaborate with health programs from UW health sciences and UW Seattle Career & Internship Center
  • Responsible for maintaining electronic database entry of student information.
  • Participate in first-year orientation activities to provide information about health & natural science options.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, industry shifts, and stakeholder interests; collect, evaluate, assess and report data related to health & natural sciences professions.
  • Attend recruiting events.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the smooth operation of the department.
  • Assist faculty with making curricular decisions that would affect students oriented to health & natural science professions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years’ experience within health care/natural sciences or higher education student advising.

    Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

  • Proven ability to function as a motivated, enthusiastic member of a team committed to student/customer success.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboratively working with students, faculty, and staff individually and in groups in a positive, realistic, and effective manner.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse community and commitment to diversity and social justice
  • Excellent group presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy including the ability to develop web-based resources and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student/customer records.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize/organize work, and manage a heavy workload with frequent interruptions.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evening or weekend programming and events.

  • Master’s or Professional degree.
  • Experience in health care recruiting, or research, or talent development.
  • Experience working with employer, industry, or professional degree program stakeholders.
  • Experience advising students on graduate and professional school application/admissions procedures for health care programs, or related experience.
  • Experience developing/implementing workshops or other programming aimed at supporting minoritized students/underserved populations.

  • The Natural Sciences & Pre-Health Career Coach is expected to attend major student activities and events held on campus and in the local community. The person has regular and frequent contact with students engaged in a variety of clubs and organizations (including committees and boards). This position requires frequent contact with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • A work schedule that fluctuates due to after-hours and weekend activities, meetings, recruiting, and graduation events which occur occasionally.
