Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU Facilities Management is seeking to hire a Groundskeeper within the Physical Plant unit on the Monroe Park Campus. The Monroe Park Groundskeeper’s primary purpose is to maintain the landscape in Monroe Park. The Groundskeeper may also work at other VCU locations including Markel Center and works under the direction of a lead worker and supervisor. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: provides and documents scheduled daily maintenance in a public park to ensure it is neat, attractive, and safe; work complies with department standards, safety procedures, and operation and maintenance information for assets under care; supports Park Keeper in policing trash and debris, mowing turf, maintaining hardscape including water features, removing snow, and providing horticulturally appropriate ornamental plant care; provides excellent customer service and will elevate complex issues to the lead or supervisor level. The Groundskeeper refers public safety issues to VCUPD . The schedule includes weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

Minimum Hiring Standards

Knowledge of horticulture and/or professional landscape maintenance practices, tools and equipment including turf care, ornamental plant care, and tree care
Mechanical aptitude
Able to read, understand, and follow procedures and instruction
Able to learn and retain new information or skills
Proficient with common landscape hand and power tools
Able to competently operate a variety of vehicles, on and off road, day or night, in adverse conditions
Able to climb ladders and work safely at height while wearing a personal fall arrest system
Able to work alone and as part of a team
Able to communicate clearly and respectfully with staff and customers
Able to use a personal computer or mobile device to receive work requests, document maintenance activity, and enter time cards against work requests
Must be fluent in spoken and written English
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
A high school diploma or equivalent is required
A valid Virginia Driver License is required

Preferred Hiring Standards

Experience maintaining landscapes in a park, commercial, municipal, or institutional setting preferred
Experience with zero-turn mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, pruning tools and other common landscape tools preferred
Knowledge of pool, fountain, or hardscape maintenance a plus
Success working in a customer service environment also a plus
VDACS Pesticide Registered Technician preferred
